Smart Report - looks like bad disk (new disk)

Featured Replies

Looks like this disk may be going, or is, bad. I have had a couple of complete systems freezes and I think I have narrowed it down to when writting to this disk possibly. Anyways, if someone else could review and give me a second opinion, be appreciated.

It is bad.

There are nearly 2000 reallocated sectors and most disks only have a few thousand spares.

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct  0x0033  052  052  036    Pre-fail  Always      -      1992

RMA it ASAP.

Thanks! I saw that and some of the "Raw_Read_Error_Rate" and "Seek_Error_Rate" numbers and figured could not be good.

I assume the process is:

1-  Shut down array

2 - shut down server

3 - replace drive

4 - power back up

5 - let system rebuild...

Going to pre-clear the replacement disk now in my test box. Is it ok to preclear on a system with unRaid 5b6a and then put the drive into a 4.7 system?

Thanks,

Shawn

No problem at all.

Joe, quick question. When reviewing a smart report, what items are you most concerned about? In my reading the following seem to be the be the ones to watch for:

1 - Reallocated_Sector_Ct

2 - Current_Pending_Sector

3 - Temperature_Celcius

4 - UDMA_CRC_Error_Count

The following do not seem to be mentioned to be concerned with:

1 - Raw_Read_Error_Rate - which on this disk was pretty high. In looking at other disks, a bunch of them have some values here...

2 - Seek_Error_Rate - again a nice large value on this disk and on a few others I have...

3 - Hardware_ECC_Recovered - on this disk again a bunch

Just wanted to get yours, and any other users, thoughts on what items to look for in these reports...

Thanks,

Shawn

Edit - just noticed, a few disks have the "Raw_Read_Error_Rate" and "Hardware_ECC_Recovered" as the same value...

Here is the smart report from the disk I used as the replacement. Precleared with no problems. Just finished a rebuild now.

That end_to_end_error value worries me...

That is a bad disk. The "FAILING NOW" under "WHEN FAILED" means just that.

<sigh> Two in one day. At least not at the same time. :) Another RMA off...

OK, this is just getting stupid. I just added a third 1TB Seagate drive and before even a preclear or anything, check the SMART status. Another one showing:

184 End-to-End_Error        0x0032   001   001   099    Old_age   Always   FAILING_NOW 8731

Now, these drives did come from a WHS server, but two in one day showing the same thing? Weird....

Different ports and controllers...

Maybe time to go to the store and just buy some new drives.  :-\

Nope, different cable, drive cage and even controller... so maybe just really crappy luck...

It is of an attribute type that is associated with age and wear, not an imminent failure.

You would probably be able to use that disk.  Note the overall smart results are "PASSED"

Thanks Joe. Just weird that two drives I plug in today both showing that. One with 11,000+ hours in use and the other with 6,000+ hours.
