Which unRaid Version for my new / first unRaid Server?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

i just ordered the components for my first unRaid Server.

Now i ask myself the question what Version of unRaid should i use?

Should i use the stable 4.7 or the latest stable beta of the 5.0 branch?

Is the beta stable enough for a production system, from the users point of view (not from the developers pov, if it would be stable it wouldn't be a beta).

Or should i stay with the "good old" 4.7 and than update later to 5.0 final?

My Server should run as media server and as Mac OS Backup Target.

I would say 4.7, except you want t backup Macs. 5.0b6a includes AFP and TimeMachine support. I would go with 5.0b6a in this case.

My machine should work as Mac OS Backup Target, but not for Timemachine but for Programs like Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

My production server runs v4.7. I use NFS with automount for macs.

I've been running v5.0beta6 since beginning of March.  I guess that I'm not a 'power user' - but my unRAID box does serve video files for several hours each day, and also runs SqueezeBoxServer to support my two SlimDevices (now Logitech) Squeezeboxes.  As far as I'm concerned, beta6 hasn't missed a beat since I first got it running - it starts up more reliably than v4.6 ever did and the user interface is much better.

For a new user, I'd definitely recommend going for the new beta.  Have any of the 'stable' releases ever proved to be totally bug-free?
