May 18, 201115 yr I use my Unraid fro photo backups. This is the procedure I use, let me know if I'm taking the long way. Or if there is a better way. 1. I click-and-drag a folder of pictures from Iphoto to a folder on my desktop. (mac) 2. I then click-and-drag that desktop folder to a disk in the Unraid. I've been on a Mac for a few months still learing. Had Unraid for 3 years. thanks

Backing up the database would indeed be the best option, though backing up each "roll/folder" individually also has its uses. I would probably not move the iPhoto database to the server, unless yours is large and you have to. The spin up delay (if the drive is sleeping) may screw with iPhoto as it may time out and then put the library back to the default location.
May 18, 201115 yr I wish it was still managed through a folder structure. I have the latest iPhoto, and have to open iPhoto in order to extract photos. Earlier versions allowed you to just browse through Finder, and view or copy files that way. I do like the ability to export to Photobucket, Flickr, Facebook within iPhoto, however (some of those features may have been in previous versions, but I don't recall)

Keep in mind that this is not the backup solution asked for in the OP. You will only have a single copy of your photos, only on the server. It would be safer to keep the files locally and have a backup on the server.
