May 20, 201115 yr The components for my new build arrive next week, and I'd like to install a SMART utility. What do you use?
May 20, 201115 yr SpeedFan Has a built-in SMART utility (short and extended). Also has a very nice detailed SMART report output which compares your drive against other drives of the same model in a large online database. Works well for internal and eSATA drives, but doesn't work for USB drives. Also lets you play with your PVM fans, if you have any. I just set-and-forget the automatic fan setting and then use it for SMART reports from time to time. I highly recommend this (free) software.
May 20, 201115 yr CrystalDiskInfo http://crystalmark.info/?lang=en is another one. This doesn't seem to have a way of running SMART short or long tests. Stephen
May 27, 201115 yr Author Thanks guys. I went with Active Hard Disk Monitor v2.1.0, and for $6 it's a good deal. The Intel SSD is not supported as far as I can tell. By any of the major monitors I looked at anyway. S.M.A.R.T info is supported, so that's a plus.
June 3, 201115 yr Just curious, why did you opt for a paid-for option when we suggested two free options? Does Active Hard Disk Monitor have some features that the other two are missing?
June 3, 201115 yr Author Just curious, why did you opt for a paid-for option when we suggested two free options? Does Active Hard Disk Monitor have some features that the other two are missing? It was preference, really. The SpeedFan interface was "off" to me. I think I like flashy... CrystalDiskInfo can't run SMART tests. Active Hard Disk Monitor has an icon in the systray that I can hover over and get a reading. I think SpeedFan does as well, so that's a silly argument if it's true.
June 4, 201115 yr I almost installed Speedfan until it asked me if it wanted to change my home page and make BING my new search engine along with installing shopping malware software. Any software like this I stay away from.
