Mix sata / sas drives?

Featured Replies

Building a second unraid box from second hand parts. I'm looking at buying older sas drives this time (first box is all sata). I tend to buy extra drives and preclear them in advance. But I was wondering if the case should arrise that I'm short a replacement sas drive, could I throw a sata drive in until I have a suitable sas drive in hand? My controllers are all LSI. Would the controller baulk? I'm aware that the sata drives are probably 6Gb/s and sas may be 12 Gb/s. Would this cause any issues besides maybe slowing down the array till a proper replacement is installed?

Thanks for any insight!

Doesn't matter if disk type change.

The interfacce speed almost negligible due to they are spinnder disk.

Are you looking to spin down the SAS drives? That is not supported in native Unraid but there is a plugin SAS Spindown which will allow the function. There are some controller/disk combinations that don't work correctly, So I would review the plugin. The author has put in logic to exclude combinations known not to work and has excluded them.

but no issue swapping SAS and SATA as stated by Vr2lo
