Physically Labeling HDD, but...

Featured Replies

I am currently moving my setup to a larger case. I am also trying to put the HDDs in order with labels for future expansion or crash. Is there a way, via unraid or seperate computer, to figure out which drive is which? The drives are encrypted, so mounting a HDD on my laptop has proved challenging. I currently have a laptop with linux mint, is there a way to mount these 1 by 1 to figure out what is on it? Or can this be done in unraid?

Usually (ideally*) Unraid identifies drives by their serial number. The drive identification as seen by Unraid is shown on the Main page of the webUI of your server.

The drive serial number is on a label on the drive . Some even have a portion of the serial number on a small label on the end of the drive opposite the connections to make it easy to see which is which without removing the drive.

*If you have RAID controllers then maybe the drive serial number isn't passed to Unraid by the controller, one of many reasons RAID controllers are not recommended.
