Migrating to a Larger-Capacity Machine

Featured Replies

I initially built my unRAID server based on a nice mini-itx mobo w/ an itx case that has 6 3.5 slots. Well boys, in less than a year I've run through my 10TB capacity and need to upgrade... lol.

So this time I'm going to go big (like 40TB+) and build it based in a nice rackmount case. If I used a new motherboard, what do I need to do to keep the same unraid file system? Will changing motherboards destroy my array?

I didn't notice any guides on migrating to new hardware (beyond the normal HDD additions). If someone knows of a guide or post that directly refers to the topic, please let me know. I'll definitely type up my experience and publish something to the wiki once I'm done with the process.

Any replies are greatly appreciated,

unraid is not hardware dependant like windows is.

i just replaced the CPU/RAM/MB in mine and it worked really well.

You just have to remember what drives go into what number device slot.

I assume you're referring to the logical unraid disk device slots under http://.../devices?

Yes. Take a screen shot of the devices page; although, you may not need it.

yea thats the one. I didn't have access to my server when i posted so couldn't describe it any better.

I have an excel sheet with all my HDD models and serials, what port on the MB/SAS Card they are one and where they are in the UnRAID device list.

When i did my MB change they were completely messed up!

If that mobo has a PCIe slot of 4x or faster, you could just transplant that mobo and drives into a larger case and add a Sata/SAS card.

I extended my atom board to 14 drives that way then upgrade the mobo later.

we all know PC parts get cheaper very quickly unless you're on the cutting edge.

So it's really that simple? Change everything and just make sure you put the drives in the right place.

Yes. It is simple. Remember to set the BIOS in the new MB correctly.
