Kingston DataTraveler USB Drive

I successfully got my UnRaid server running with a Kingston DataTraveler 2 gig usb drive.  I have tried to setup another for a friend using a Kingston DataTraveler 1 gig and Kingston DataTraveler 4 gig with no success.

My question is does anyone have UnRaid working with a Kingston DataTraveler 1gig or a Kingston DataTraveler 4 gig version of this USB Drive?

I also tried a Lexar 512mb JDX512-00-500 USB Drive and cannot get that to boot UnRaid.  Does anyone have this version of USB drive working?

I setup the drives the same way as the 2 gig version that works and am trying to boot on the same computer with the same configuration.

They should have all worked.  Hmmm...  U3 software has to be removed.  Check this Wiki page http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting, and search the forums for threads on non-booting flash drives.  There are posts somewhere, with a list of things to check, when a flash drive won't boot.

Here's a few links, there are others too:

Hi and thanks for the quick reply I was working on this while you must have been typing the message.  I got them all to work.  I used the HP format tool but needed to select FAT32, quick format and MS-Startup disk for the Kingston's 1 and 4 gb versions.

The Lexar needed to be FAT quick format and MS-DOS startup disk to be checked.

Will selecting Create a DOS startup disk when formatting the USB key cause me any problems down the road?  The Kingston 2 gb version did not need this checked.

I got  2 - 1gb usb keys directly from kingston for $10 shipped they appear to be working fine.

I spent about 5 hours with 2 different sticks and 4 different computers fiddling with BIOS settings to no avail.  It seems that some sticks (I had 2 different 1GB models) simply will not boot unRAID as it is now without these steps.  Once formatted with the HP tool as FAT32 and as a DOS startup disc, both USB drives now boot perfectly.

It might be worth adding this information to the page http://www.lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=46 as it would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.  The problem seems to be somewhat common with 1GB drives and is about the minimum USB storage size available these days.  The two I have are Kingston DataTraveler and Imation

The HP tool requires you to enter a path to DOS system files when formatting a USB drive as a DOS Startup Disc.  I used the standard windows format tool to create a boot floppy and then pointed the HP format tool to A: for the system files.  These files might existing somewhere inside a windows installation though.
