SFF unRAID build

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks!

I am looking to build my first server and would love some advice on a SFF parts list!

Budget: I would like to keep it under $400 if possible (not including drives).

Drives: I currently have 3 2TB drives I can pull from my main PC to use and would like to be able to expand to 6-7 drives eventually.

Purpose:  File serving for my HTPC, Sabnzbd, sickbeard, couchpotato, torrenting

My goal is to keep this mITX if possible.  I love SFF builds and the smaller the better!

Parts List (Newegg):

CPU: intel core i3 2100 - $125 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115078

Mobo: Zotac H67ITX-C-E 1555 - $125 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500064

Case: Lian-Li Q08 - $110 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112265

RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) 1600 DDR3 Ram - Have from previous build

PSU: Corsair CX430 - $25 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

While I would like to keep it ITX and use the Lian-Li Q08, I would be open to going microATX and getting a larger case like the Lian-Li v354 or A04.

Any advice is most welcome!  Is this overkill for the purpose?  Are there better ways to achieve my goals?

Thanks!

Nice bundle price on that mobo and a different SFF Lian Li case:

Newegg bundle

My only hesitation is that most new LGA 1155 boards use the Realtek 8111E NIC, which is pretty flaky with unRAID.  I don't know for sure if this board does or not, I suggest emailing Zotac and asking about it.  The driver download for this board is titled h67lan_8111, but unfortunately that doesn't tell us if the board is 8111E, 8111C, or one of the others in the Realtek 8111 family.

Also keep in mind that unRAID doesn't support wifi connections, only hard wired Ethernet.

I was mapping out an SFF unraid build but in the end went for one of these:

With a hotswap bay in the DVD drive slot it gives me 5x externally accessable HDDs so not quite the 6-7 you mentioned but potentially 12Tb storage using current HDDs and with the system USB key internal.

There's a few unraid builds in one of these documented on the www.

Cheers

Eric
