p1lot
I started a thread a few days ago, where I wanted to use my old hardware (which I used before as an Ubuntu server) for an unRAID server, turned out I want to use this hardware for a workstation. In my old server I had 2 x 2TB WD Green drives (in my student flat). At home, where I am during summer holidays, I had an external 2TB WD Green connected to my router. So I bought 3 new 2TB WD Greens to build an unRAID box. Basically what I have now are 6 disks, a 1 x 2-port PCI-Express SATA Controller (Sil 3132) and a WD Caviar Blue 640GB drive, which I want to use as my cache drive. This server is built for 10 harddrives in total, this is just the "secondary" server while I'm at home. For my flat I want to build a server with 3 TB disks. My idea was to get something like: Mainboard: ASRock 880GM-LE (I'm an ASRock-Fan as of recently, also have the Z68 Pro in my main rig), but any cheaper board with 6 SATA ports will do CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 240e (Dual core because I use Sab, Sick and Couch) Is it worth for power consumption to get the "e"-version? Another Sil 3132 2-port card so I have 10 ports in total. PSU: Corsair CX 430 V2 430W RAM: As RAM is so cheap at the moment, I will get 2x2GB Kingston. Flash drive: San Disk Cruzer Contour 16 GB (I have this one already) Should I replace the stock CPU cooler and get a Scythe Katana 3 or something similar? Is the Caviar Blue fast enough for a cache drive? As hot swap bays are quite expensive here (Austria), I thought I would get those from the UK: http://www.xcase.co.uk/hotswap-stoarge-kit-p/hddkit-xx-500.htm The price is really reasonable and they seem to be solid. As fans I have some Scythe Slip Streams with 800rpm lying around. Let me know what you think and I will place my order. I would really like to get a small decent case which is not too expensive, but I think the Sharkoon Rebel 9 will do it as well. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, p1lot PS: What do I use in order supply 10 harddrives with power, only 4 connections are available on the PSU. Quote Link to comment
