Server won't power up after graceful shutdown by UPS

Featured Replies

Hello,

First post on the forum after trying to find some information about my problem but probably search for the wrong things... :-)

I have built an Unraid server (4.7) based on a MSI H55-ED55 motherboard and everything works without any problem.

Today I bought an UPS, an APC Back-UPS ES 550VA 230V (BE550G-GR). I live in Sweden so perhaps an European model?

Anyway, installed the Apcupsd and Clean Powerdown packages, Apcupsd with option "Power Down UPS after shutdown?(YES/NO)" set to Yes.

I tried the setup by pulling out the cord from wall socket, the server stayed up but after a couple of minutes it shut down just as it should. So far no problems.

After 2-3 minutes I connected the UPS to the mains again and the monitor connected to the UPS turned on, but computer stayed off.

The Bios setting "Restore on AC Power Loss" is set to  ON "Always leaves the computer in the power on state."

Upgraded bios to latest version, and did some more testing, it seems as if the bios setting "Last State" and "On" do the same thing... If I pull the power while the computer is on, it turns on when the power comes back, but if computer is already turned off it stays off.

So, finally, my question... Have I done something wrong? Has somebody else with same motherboard got this to work? Or is it a bad Bios?

Best regards,

Niklas

I think what might be happening is that your server, as far as it is concerned, never lost power.

To the motherboard, it was always on an uninterrupted power source and was gracefully shut down, not to be confused with power being pulled in an instant.

I do not have an answer for you on how to fix this.  The motherboard and PSU does not seem to be able to differentiate between power from the UPS and power from the wall.

Hi,

I don't think that is the problem, the parameter:

"Power Down UPS after shutdown?(YES/NO)" set to Yes."

makes the UPS power down totally after a couple of seconds after the server has turned off, and that it actually works is indicated by that the monitor connected to same UPS turns off also.

Also its the same thing if I disconnect the power cable from the computer while it's shut off, and then put it back to the mains. Computer stays off so if I don't have misunderstood the bios parameter:

"Restore on AC Power Loss" is set to  ON

this motherboard doesn't actually turn on after power loss...

With that said, I kind of solved the problem by enabling the "Wake up Event By" the option "Resume From S3 By USB Device".

The UPS send out something on the USB port when it get power back, and computer turns on again. At least that is what i think happens since it work... :-)

You are correct in your understanding of what that option does.

Also its the same thing if I disconnect the power cable from the computer while it's shut off, and then put it back to the mains. Computer stays off so if I don't have misunderstood the bios parameter:

If you plug the computer directly into the wall and then pull the cord the computer will turn off NOT shut down.  Then if you plug it back in it should come back on.  The difference is the turn off vs. shut down.

this motherboard doesn't actually turn on after power loss...

but if the server is shut down cleanly power was never abruptly removed while the computer was ON.

With that said, I kind of solved the problem by enabling the "Wake up Event By" the option "Resume From S3 By USB Device".

If that works, then I say leave it and use it that way.

I would consider this to be a fault in the bios.

My Intel H55 board works as it should - the only problem with powering back on is if the power returns after the server shuts down, but before the UPS shuts off.
