Limited access to UNRAID via SAMBA

Featured Replies

Limited access to UNRAID via SAMBA Recently, there have been reports of viruses that encrypt drives. To protect myself, I want to limit access to the UNRAID server. Is it possible for UNRAID to require a password each time you log in from an external Windows or Linux computer? Would it also be okay for UNRAID to automatically log out a user if they are not using it?

Unfortunately, it is very difficult to force a log out from an SMB server of a client or a client to be able to log out from a server.  (This is by design.  Microsoft (MS) designed SMB for use in large organizations.  These organization want a minimum of hassle for IT-ignorant employees!)

I am going to point you to two threads that deal with this problem.  The first one is general one to secure your server as MS intended.

and the second one is a way to prevent either accidental damage to files via cockpit error or write access by Malware.

I still use this method to upload to both my servers.  It is a hassle but it is usable if your Directory Trees for the shares you want to protect are reasonably stable on your server.  (I

probably setup a transfer of files two to four times per week and it only adds about two minutes of time required.)

PS:  SMB will what MS calls their networking scheme.  A group of Linux Gurus reversed engineered SMB and wrote an equivalent networking scheme to run on Linux computers called SAMBA.   When they did this they attempted to make sure that it would work with SMB clients and servers.
