August 19, 201114 yr Right now I'm using SMB shares over wifi and my modem is set to n/g wireless (bt homehub 2). What are the optimum settings for streaming media and how can I implement them within unraid and xbmc? I remember trying NFS in unraid but i coudln't find them on xbmc. Any suggestions much appreciated for making it more efficient. thanks.
August 20, 201114 yr I have no clue as to XBMC as I do not use that, but I know from experiencing, streaming a DVD over a basic N pretty much maxes it out. Hi Def? Forget it. If you have a g/n router, probably only supports 2.4Ghz. For the best performance, get yourself a WAP that supports Dual Band N and stream your movies over the 5Ghz channel. Course you will most likely need to replace the wireless card in whatever device you are streaming to. All the PC's in my house have the Linksys/Cisco USB dual band sticks for streaming, and for my PBO's, I hardwired them all as they cannot run 5Ghz... Shawn
August 20, 201114 yr ... streaming a DVD over a basic N pretty much maxes it out. +1. If wired ethernet is not an option (gigabit preferably, but even 10/100 is do-able for streaming HD...), look into Ethernet over Powerline, or Ethernet over Cable. There's a recent thread in here discussing the pros and cons, so I won't bother going over them again, but worth a read. Personally, I would stay away from wireless for streaming completely. Just too many outside variables can affect it for reliable HD streaming. NOTE: If you go with Powerline, make sure to get the newer standard (500 mbps). 200 is marginal for HD, and 85 is unusable for anything but SD. Also, nothing wrong with SMB for streaming media over a network. I'm streaming uncompressed blu-ray with 30+ mbps streams from my Unraid server without a hiccup using SMB.
