ZFS snapshot questions

Featured Replies

I doubt I have much use for ZFS in my media shares but I can see that the snapshots would be very handy for backing up my cache share.

Ive seen a script to automate snapshots on a schedule but haven’t found a good way to restore from snapshots. Is there a plugin or docker that would make this process easier?

I think the command for rolling back to a snapshot is zfs rollback snapshot, its as simple as that. The zfs master plugin also allows you to rollback using a snapshot.

Will it rollback a specific folder in a snapshot? For example to restore appdata for a specific docker?

It rollsback to that point when that snapshot was taken. If its a snapshot appdata it will rollback everything to that point when the snapshot of appdata took place. Its might be better to have a dataset for each app in your appdata share that way you can rollback specific folders. You can also go into the snapshots by browsing the .zfs folder at the root of a dataset. Its hidden by default but you can just pull files from it if you want. Its read only so it cant be modified.

Thanks. I’ll probably just browse the .zfs folder and use an mv to restore then if I don’t find something more automated.

Or I guess it’ll be cp if it’s read only.😁

Not quite sure what you meant by this? I have a directory for each docker ie appdata/plexmediaserver/, appdata/tdarr/, appdata/radarr/.
