August 16, 20232 yr Current setup has 3 TB hard drives but I have bought several 8 tb hdds that I want to replace the 3tbs with. Question is am I better off to just find a way to transfer all my content off of the current system and just blow out the array and put a new one in, or these days with the ZFS thing should I just avoid having the traditional array at all? Just curious. I am running on basically the same setup that I built like 3 years ago just ready for an update looking for what will give me the best long term results.
August 16, 20232 yr Community Expert A big question is whether you are going to want to add additional drives in the future. This is easy with the traditional Unraid array, but much harder/more restrictive with ZFS arrays.
August 16, 20232 yr Author Is the performance uplift of ZFS just worth it? The one big issue I have always had with unraid was how slow it is to copy files to/from so I guess for the boost in performance I am probably willing to be a little more restricted
August 16, 20232 yr Author So with the new version its kind of an either or sort of scenario right like you can build a zfs array and you can also build the old unraid one? so lets pretend Ihad the ability to hook enough of these drives up I could theoretically just build the zfs array and copy stuff from the old one to it and then just tear out the old one?
