July 18, 200619 yr Is the Stacker the end-all case for an unraid system? Has anyone tried anythign else? I'd like to have the removable trays ( so lots of exposed bays) but then again i'd love to have big 120 fans cooling the drives. Any suggestions?
July 18, 200619 yr The Lian Li PC-6077 is a nice case for up to 9 drives. Have to be careful the mobile racks are not too long or they will interfere with the motherboard. Another possibility might be the Lian Li PC-7077, which should hold 12 drives, but we haven't built any system using it.
July 18, 200619 yr Yes, the stacker is the end all case. go with it, and you can't go wrong. It's big, roomy, 2 power supplies, can be picked up inexpensively and is of very high quality.
July 18, 200619 yr I think the best thing about the case is the wheels!! I have a Thermaltake Armor and I hate it sooo much because if I need to get to the back of the case I have to pick that huge thing up. The stacker... I just roll it out. I think it really is the 'end all' case!
July 18, 200619 yr Agreed on the wheels. I keep my UnRaid in the most undignified of places (a back room in my basement where the cat's litterbox is ;-) There's no monitor hooked up to it at all, just power, and ethernet. When setting it up, or adding/upgarding a drive (just added a drive this weekend, smooth as silk), it sure is nice to wheel that beast out for a little time in the daylight. I'd throw my back out if I had to lift it.
July 22, 200619 yr Author With the stacker and drive trays..all of your drives are cooled by 40x40 fans. 11 of them!! Is this loud? and annoying pitch?
July 25, 200619 yr I'm using the 4-into-3 adapters, with the 120MM fans. It's one of my quiter PC's even with all the fans. Plus, the cats don't seem to mind ;-)
November 1, 200619 yr I just stumbled upon a case that seems like it would be perfect for a media server. http://xoxide.com/lian-li-pc-343b-case.html Its modular, with 18 5.25" drive bays, and adaptors which convert 3 5.25" bays into 4 3.5" bays with a 120 mm fan in each drive cage, which would give 24 3.5" bays from that alone. If I'm not mistaken, theres also additional drive cages that are available for it that attach to the rear panel of the case for a few more drives. However, the price is a factor ($350 without any 3.5" drive cages), and unRAID only currently supports 12 drives anyway. Maybe a 24 drive version that uses 2 or 3 parity drives would be perfect? :-D (This isn't a real feature request, I can't afford that many drives anyway, just wishful thinking.)
November 1, 200619 yr I could just imagine the look on my wifes face if I was to roll that puppy into my office... LOL... I really want one, but I don't know what I would use it for. If we could get unRAID up to more drives... well...... I know what case I would like to use
November 1, 200619 yr Okay, so 24 drives can easily be mounted on just the front.... lol... Hey Tom, you have our 24 drive support yet?
November 1, 200619 yr umm.. so I guess you can mount 2 MOBOs in this thing as well.... hrmmmmmmmm 2 unRAID servers in one case? I guess you would have to use 2 600watt power supplies? Or how much power is drawn with a 12disk array? Seriously, if I could put 2 MOBO in here I might consider checking out this case.... the wife will kill me, but I really am into this huge case
November 2, 200619 yr I sent a picture of it to my son to let him know what I was drooling about these days... he said I could put a cushion on the top and use it as a stool or ottoman...
