Disk Errors after Parity Check - Next steps?

Featured Replies

Hello. I ran a parity check on my HOME server over Thanksgiving and came back to find 362 errors, with the SysLog showing lots of read errors on Disks 8 and 11 specifically, but Disk 11 only now showing in SMART error state on the Dashboard. This is the third straight parity check in the last month that I've encountered errors after not having any previously on this server (only 2 and 9 errors on the last 2 checks, and all 3 times I had the "Write Corrections to Parity" box unchecked). So what should I do from here? Replacing Disk 11 seems obvious but is it safe at this point to trust that Parity itself is actually fine and just rebuild the new Disk 11 from that? And what about Disk 8? Replace it next or continue to trust it until it goes into SMART error state? Diagnostics and SysLog zips attached and any advise appreciated. Thanks!

Disk11 appears to be in a worse state, so I would try to replace that one first, but since you only have one parity, any read errors on disk8 will likely cause some corruption on the rebuilt disk, unless there's no data on the corresponding sectors, but not many other options at the moment.

Hmm, okay. Well I do have everything backed up to other servers. Not all of it is easy to get to, but assuming I can pull those backups together is there a way to use New Config to rebuild parity entirely with new replacement Disks 11 and 8 restored from those backups and make sure there is no corruption going forward that way? I hate the idea of having corruption that I don't even know where it is until I'm halfway into a movie or a TV season when it pops up. So whatever has the best chance of avoiding that please let me know.

Yes, you can also try to copy everything you can from those disks to new ones, any read errors those files won't be copied, so you'd just need to restore the missing data from the backups, in case that's easier.

That's a lot easier actually. Thanks! I'll do that.
