I appreciate any help with this one. I'm able to get the Win 11 VM running perfectly fine right before I add the GPU & Audio. I followed this guide:

Windows 11 Atlas OS Unraid and everything is perfect until I follow "Step VII: Pass Through GPU and Reallocating Resources". Once I add in this info and start the VM the Unraid OS freezes and reboots. It doesn't matter if I am using Q35-7.2 or i440fx-3.1. I built this setup as a media server and remote gaming rig but for the life of me I can't get this GPU to work within the VM.

 

Also I'm not sure which audio device I should be putting into the "Sound Card"

So I was able to get it to boot up with the GPU passed through by using a GPU Bios found here VGA Bios Collection . Only issue is mines an XFX and none of these fit the bill. and now I'm stuck with this in my device manager after installing the driver and updating and choppy video... 

Looks like it's a Win-11 & AMD Driver issue. I did some research and it appears others are having this issue as well in barebones Win 11 installs. I've reached out to XFX and am awaiting their feedback.

 

 

I feel like I'm being bothered by the same thing. I am currently able to successfully enter the win11 system, and the GPU can output images to the monitor normally. The driver can also be installed normally. Everything looks fine. But win11 cannot be shut down in any way. Once turned off, unraid will freeze and trigger the motherboard to power off and restart, and the sound of the power relay can be heard.

The platform I am using is 13500t+z790m+7800xt+ddr5 4800.
I tried most of the items in the motherboard settings, to no avail.
CSM is off, vtd vtx is on, sdiod is on, iommu is off (or on, no change)

 

 

After my observation, after clicking the virtual machine to shut down, the core assigned to win11 will be fully loaded, and qemu seen in the top command is the first. The memory is not released at this time. Then qemu can no longer see it and the memory is released. But the libvirtd process will load up single or dual cores, and then I can no longer connect to unraid.

Another strange thing is that after unraid crashes, The router's pppoe link will crash. until the system is restarted.

Exactly! If I try to restart or shutdown the VM my whole system crashes and Unraid reboots. Frustrating to spend that kind of $ on a GPU that can't function properly on a VM. I've read countless threads on reddit and other forums of people using either 7800 or 7900 GPU's having the exact same issues. If I can't get this thing figured out I'm sending this 7800 XT back to amazon and getting a 4070 ti. I've always been an AMD/ATI guy for 20+ years but this is on whole different level of frustration.

Was this ever solved? I'm having the exact same problem with my 7800XT (coupled with 12600K and Z790). I've isolated the problem to the GPU passthrough. As soon as I use a virtual cpu (VNC) the win11 VM boots, reboots and shuts down properly. The VM with GPU passthrough works perfectly with GPU being recognized correctly and even the AMD adrenaline drivers installed and working as intended. Device manager doesnt give any errors. But with the GPU passthrough it crashes Unraid every single time when rebooting or shutting down. Tried every tip I could find online by editing the VM xml, installed the amd vendor reset plugin, but nothingh works so far. Only a forced shutdown seems to work, but obviously this is not what you want to be doing all the time.

@Arie sadly, I had to buy an Nvidia GPU. Once I did that everything was fixed. AMD GPUs do not play well with unRAID. I went to a 4070 Super and now all my unRAID issues have been fixed. I even tried Proxmox with the same setup and my VMs crashed the entire system every time.

That's very sad to hear indeed. I do see a lot less of these topics popping up about Nvidia GPU's. Even sadder that AMD seems such a solid value buy for gaming now and Nvidia dropping thge ball with ther 50xx series.

 

Ontopic: I do have some workaround for the issue: If I reboot the Unraid server itself, while the VM is running, the server shuts down the VM (not sure if regular of forced though), and reboots normally without crashing first.

@Arie Yeah, I figured that out, but whenever I needed a GPU driver update or a Windows security update I didn't want to have to reboot my entire server every time. Super sad! I took everything I intended to put into my Unraid server as far as hardware was concerned and updated my main gaming rig instead. Then, I went to Intel & Nvidia and no issues. When I was running my AMD 7900X3D CPU, I got a second Nvidia Quadro P2000 for transcoding and that didn't go over very well. Unraid kept pulling the 4070 Super in for transcoding and trying to run both in Docker even though it was passed through. That's what drove the Intel switch too. But honestly, I had better performance with the AMD cpu than the 14700K I have now. BUT AMD doesn't have Quick Sync... 👎But I've learned how to isolate hardware a lot better now so maybe if I tried a P2000 again it would work 🤷‍♂️
