Share data set to use pool cache_dwnld, but files / folders exist on the cache_large pool

This morning I noticed this error in Fix Common problems. I had recently changed my share named "windowsdisk" from no cache  to use cache_large and copied files to windowsdisk. Subsequently copied these files to my "/data/media/movies and /data/media/tv share which uses cache_dwnld.

I thought "well I'll just delete the files from cache_large and clean this right up!" Doh!, imagine my surprise when my files also disappeared from share "/data/media/movies and /data/media/tv". I think I understand what happened and why it happened.

The damage is done. Thankfully I didn't delete the whole folder structure from cache_large. How can I delete the now empty folder structure from cache_large without also deleting them from my "data" share? I'm afraid to move them because they're empty and I don't want to overwrite my /data/media/movies and /data/media/tv folders. Stupid rookie mistake I know.

I think there is something missing from your list of events but not sure.

the problem almost certainly arose from you mixing disk shares and user shares.   The /data location is a user share and applies regardless of what array drive or pool the files are on.   The cache_large for instance is a physical device and any files you delete from there that are also deleted from the user share.

did you by any chance us a move rather than a copy when you tried to move files?    This can have unexpected effects.

itimpi, thank you! So I did place files on my share called windowsdisk with cache enabled and set to cache_large. MOVED files from windowsdisk to /data/media/movies and /data/media/tv. Share /data cache is set to cache_dwnload. Deleted files from cache_large which deleted them from /data/media/movies and /tv just as you described.

Yes I did move the files instead of copying them. Sorry for the mixup, but how can I delete the  empty folders left behind on cache_large?

That means that you almost certainly feel foul of the behaviour described in the Caution in this of the online documentation accessible via the Manual link at the bottom of the Unraid GUI.

If you had used something like Dynamix File Manager plugin to do this it would have protected you from this problem as it always uses a copy/delete strategy for moving files.

You can use Dynamix File Manager to delete the empty folders.

Thank you again. I will consider this a learning experience.
