FileZilla

Featured Replies

Sorry for my ignorance, but how should I use Filezilla to transfer files from my laptop to my Unraid Server?

I want to transfer files faster than with the regular "copy/paste" under Windows 7

Thanks

FTP is a much slower protocol then using windows explorer.

I thought FTP will be faster (somebody told me that few years ago when I was trying to build a server with FreeNAS)

When I copy/paste from my laptop (wifi N) speed is ~ 5 to 8Mb/sec max

Is it normal ?

What can I do to optimize the speed?

Thanks

change to cable connection, 5-8mb/s is very nice with wifi !

No one can tell you what "normal" is for wifi because it depends on a lot of factors.  Walls, channel interference, distance from the AP, equipment, etc.  Interference is a very common cause of reduced performance...but even at that, it's impossible to achieve "rated" speeds.  Like was mentioned previously, a wired connection is going to give you far better performance.

It used to be true that FTP was far more of an optimized protocol than SMB/CIFS traffic, but that's been greatly improved over the last several years.  I'd argue that FTP is still faster, particularly over serialized WAN's and the internet, but the difference much less than it used to be.  Bottom line, if you want to rip your disks as fast as they can go, a wired connection is the only way you'll get there.
