XFS or ZFS or BTRFS

Featured Replies

I'm migrating from Ubuntu to Unraid. I currently using an old dell desktop as my server. It's an i5-4460 with 16GB of RAM. I'm hoping to upgrade to a new system in the next 12 months. My currently storage array is 4x14TB drives in a raid 5 and a 1TB ssd for boot. I have 3x 20TB in a box for the migration. My plan is to create a new (XFS or ZFS) array with the 20TB drives and then copy over the data from the existing array by mounting it in a VM. I primarily use the system for Home Assistant (around 40 docker containers) and Plex. Given the age of my existing hardware and maxed out RAM of 16GB am I better off with BTRFS or XFS? I read ZFS requires a lot of RAM. I'm also hesitant to use XFS since I've had two filesystems eat themselves on power loss. I now have an UPS but I'm still nervous. Thoughts?

Btrfs is a good option for the array, though if you don't care about the added features like checksums and snapshots, xfs is still the most recommend for the typical user, it's usually pretty robust, but it can get corrupted like any fs.

My existing rootfs is ext4. I use timeshift for snapshots. Snapshots of some kind or another are a must have.
