February 12, 20242 yr Hey have a drive going bad in a zfs pool of 4drives. These are sata ssd drives and I'm returning 2x of them so thinking of changing the build anyway as would be better to use nvme ssds & have spinning drives in the sas chasis rather than 2.5" drives in adapters. My question is how does adding a drive work in zfs pools? I know zfs is not flexible but would like someone to explain it in black & white. Then I can also copy it to the documentation for others to use. I also have a nvme mirror pool of 2x drives, is it possible to add a 3rd drive (is the option another mirror only?) If I want it to be a Zpool (with parity) do I need to backup the data and start from scratch creating a new pool of the 3 drives? Also just for clarity if say I had 4drives in a z1 pool & wanted to add another drive what are the options. Can I make it a z1 pool of 5 drives? Can I make it a z2 pool? Thanks Edited February 12, 20242 yr by dopeytree

You can only add another vdev of the same type and with, so another 4 devices in this case. 10 hours ago, dopeytree said: Can I make it a z1 pool of 5 drives? Can I make it a z2 pool? No to both.
February 12, 20242 yr Author Thanks - found the release notes have lots more detail on ZFS since last looked which was upgraded to 6.12 https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/release-notes/6.12.0/ Would it be ok if I submit an update to documentation that copies the release note zfs to the above section in the manual? https://docs.unraid.net/category/zfs/ Or are you guys holding out till 2nd part of zfs is implemented? The new manual is super cool. Edited February 12, 20242 yr by dopeytree
February 12, 20242 yr Author Is this right that a bad sector warning shows in notifications but not the disks smart health logs? Confused as it shows up under Smart on the main homepage but then when you look at the disk itself nothing is logged. But there is a log in notifications. (Dev2) disk now removed from pool. February 12, 20242 yr Community Expert Most likely are just those, but it can be different attributes, hover the mouse on top of the thumbs down and it will show what it is complaining about.
December 4, 2025Dec 4 unraid os version newer than 7.1.x can now add drives directly to vedv by using terminal, but hasn't supported by webui. So at least according to the documentation, if you want to add drives into an existing zpool, the way that is suggested which is also how unraid handle by default is adding an additional vdev.
