[6.12.6] DISK2 has read errors to DISK 2 Not installed - Disk failed?

Featured Replies

Diagnostics attached (I downloaded diagnostics prior to reboot).

Just now I saw Disk 2 has 208 read errors, and I tried SMART short self-test (attached).

Self-test results states: "Smartctl open device: /dev/sdd failed: INQUIRY failed"

The extended SMART test was greyed out.

I then restarted the server and now disk 2 is not installed.

Has disk 2 failed completely and I will need to replace it with new and rebuild?

Thank you in advanced.

Disk2 dropped offline, check/replace cables to see if the disk comes back online.

Hi JorgeB,

I've swapped the (mini SAS to SATA) cables between disk 2 and 3 as per your suggestion. Disk 2 remains offline even with the previous disk 3 cable, while disk 3 operates normally with the previous disk 2 cable. Based on this, would you agree that it's safe to conclude Disk 2 has failed and needs to be replaced?

Thanks.

Disk 2 seems to be working, SMART short self test attached. I am running a SMART extended self-test, and is at 90% for over two hours. Will upload file once complete.

New diagnostics also attached.

I removed disk 2 from the server case and noticed I h ad previously taped over the 3.3V Pin on the power connector as it was a shucked drive. Then I wondered if it was a issue with 3.3V pin not being isolated properly, rather than the disk physically failing.

I then removed disk 3 and use its power and sata to connect to disk 2, and insert a new hard disk into disk 3's physical slot and plugged into disk 2's sata and power. I probably shouldn't have done that as I think this is what tiggered Unraid to think a new device is installed and requires a parity sync/ data-rebuild. Unraid booted fine and it recognized disk 2 and the new disk so I shut it down. I did not start the array.

I then removed the new hard disk from disk 3's physical slot, and inserted back the old disk 3 and booted array fine.

Now Unraid thinks that my disk 2 is a new hardware.

Disk 2 is recognized. Perhaps 3.3V pin not properly insulated

Since the disk got disabled it needs to be rebuilt, before rebuilding, check that the emulated disk is mounting and contents look correct, to do that, unassign disk2 and start the array.

Thanks JorgeB. When you say the disk got disabled, are you referring to a write failure or the fact that the disk was "offline" while array was running and therefore it's not longer in sync and required rebuilding?

Do you think it's worthwhile waiting for the SMART extending self test to complete? The recommended polling time for extended is 1498 mins, but google suggest others have taken significantly more time (4days?) for a 14 tb, and some have gotten stuck.

Do you see any error from the short self test and can I stop the extended test? Then unassign disk 2 and start array, check contents as you mentioned. If contents look okay, rebuild disk 2.

Update - After 26 hours of extended self test it's still at 90%. I disabled disk 2 and started the array, which stopped the extended self test. I checked the emulated disk and found data was intact. I then started rebuilding the array without preclearing disk 2.

SMART for the disk looks OK, so most likely it was a power/connection issue that got it disabled, but if there are any errors during the rebuild post new diags.

Finished rebuilding disk 2 with no errors. Marked post as solved, thank you!
