Better/full support for USB NICS (hotplug)

Featured Replies

I would like to see Unraid supporting USB network devices better. Right now, it is possible to use an USB NIC, but no plug&play / hotplug is supported.

This can lead to huge problems: When the USB connection drops out (for any reason) it is not possible to regain a network connection (even with manually re-plugging the NIC) without doing a server reboot. This makes USB NICs more or less unusable. Also see discussion here:

Are you looking for the IP stack to reload/pickup the USB device from a hotplug event?

Uhm, maybe? I am sorry, my understanding of computer networking is too vague to properly answer to your question. All I can tell is that re-plugging a USB-NIC in Unraid does not happen to regain any network connection unless you reboot.

((To me it seems like this event

usbcore: registered new interface driver r8152

only occours during booting, but not after (re)plugging any usb nic device. Could that be the problem?))

Feel free to have a look at the topic i linked above (also scroll up a little bit), there was at least some discussion about the problem, leading to the conclusion that unraid simply does not support usb nic hotplugging. Hence my feature request here. It seems to be pretty common for USB devices to drop out from time to time (I belive this is why it is strongly suggested not to use usb devices in arrays with parity); if the drop happens to your NIC USB device, you are left with no other option than to manually reboot. This is what I would like to see fixed.

bumping this older thread but yeah i think that's the ask.  usb devices will sporadically reset due to an abundance of reasons but i've noticed unraid will no longer function with the usb nic until the entire server is restarted, even though it still detects the usb nic.  see below example disconnect:
