SwedeOzzie
Hi. Got a new seagate 12tb, and i want it to replace my current 8tb so i can increase disk size in future. Problem, new seagate disk gets disabled with other disks. History of what i have tried. 1st i removed my parity and directly replaced it with 12, got errors. 2. Put 8tb parity back, and added 12tb as second parity. got errors disk disabled. 3. started replacing cables on disks that was getting disabled. 4. No change so i started swapping power to rails that was not used. did not work. 5. i can get disk 4 back online if i remove it and put it back. but as soon as i try to get the 12tb in disk 4 fails.. Please help i dont understand why i cant add 12tb disk? lairstorage-diagnostics-20240614-0944.zip Quote Link to comment
Solution JorgeB Posted June 14 Solution Share Posted June 14 Problems with parity and disk4 at the same time, do they share something, like a power splitter? Quote Link to comment
SwedeOzzie
Hi, Not anymore and from what i can tell they should even be on different rails/ atleast not on same cable to psu. (the powersupply is old, Its a Corsair vs 450) If we think that power is a issue then i have a separate psu i can try. and only attach new parity and disk 4 to that one. Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
It's worth a try, could also be controller related, since both disks are connected to the same 2 port Asmedia controller, I assume you are using a controller with 4 Asmedia chips and 8 total ports? Or are there 4 individual two port controllers? Quote Link to comment
SwedeOzzie
https://www.startech.com/en-se/cards-adapters/8p6g-pcie-sata-card Not sure how a sff-8087 connector work, but according to site "4 2-Port SATA host controllers" I will run extension cord to get the psu and test. If its the controller, i have 10disks any tips? Quote Link to comment

SwedeOzzie
Is there a quicker way since parity has been 100% and disk 4 100% synced. (Spare PSU being used so no disk is using power splitters) Or do i need to unassigned disk restart array and add them as replacement drives? (even if its the same drive?) Not really, you could do a new config but then would need to run a correcting parity check, and that takes as long, though don't rebuild on top if the emulated disk is not mounting. SwedeOzzie
Im half way though the parity, never gotten this far while doing both drives at the same time. So must have been a power issue. Seeing performance numbers from your link, last question what would you recommend? *not sure if there is a downside should i get 2x LSI LSI00301 (9207-8i) PCI-Express 3.0 x8 or a single card LSI 9300-16i SAS-controller HBA-card, 12 Gbps 16 SATA SAS-port PCIe 3.0, PCIe 8X HBA Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Performance wise should be very similar, I would probably get the cheapest option, if number of used PCIe slots is not important. 1 Quote Link to comment
SwedeOzzie
Now after a day of no problems and no errors, it failed again. Since i marked this as solved should i start new thread? 1. Disk 1 failed, removed and added again to test = fail 2. Former parity 8tb added to disk1 = fail 2.1 Now that i know there is no power issue, HX650 now installed. 3. Just to test i tested new cable harness = fail on both devices. 3.1 (Random sometimes disk3 disappear, when disk1 fail, this is why i tested new cable harness) 4. So my controller card is the issue? 4.1 I have already ordered LSI SAS 9300 8i (LSI 3008 chipset). *based on previous conv. lairstorage-diagnostics-20240616-1305.zip Quote Link to comment
JorgeB
Same two ports dropped the devices and the same time, suggesting a controller problem. 1 Quote Link to comment
