Root password reset

Featured Replies

I bought a LincStation NAS that has Unraid installed. I thought I created a new root password, but it doesn't work. Now I can't log in to the NAS. All the documentation to reset the password references files on a USB, I don't have those files. Example below:

Shutdown your server.

Plug your USB flash device into a Windows or Mac computer.

Open the USB device in Explorer / Finder.

Locate and delete the files:

       boot/config/shadow

       boot/config/smbpasswd

Securely eject your USB device and connect it to the Unraid server again.

Boot up the Unraid server and it will ask you to set up a new password, as if you'd just completed a first boot of Unraid.

I've created the USB using Unraid USB Creator here: https://unraid.net/download, but the files listed are not there. I'm at a lost.

I think the instructions in the manual that you have quoted are slightly wrong (should not have "boot" in the name) as the files to delete are:

  • config/shadow
  • config/smbpasswd

The names as quoted with the "boot" in the name is what they would be when the flash drive is mounted within Unraid itself.

And if the files are not in the config directory, then no password has yet been set.

This is the USB I made. I don't have the config directory on the LincStation NAS. I would not even know how to get it off of the NAS.

Are you saying you have pulled the USB drive out of the LincStation (I believe it is plugged in inside one of the NVME bays) and checked that.

Does it ask for a password on the web UI or do you need access to the server and plug a scren in?
