A couple of noob questions

Featured Replies

I emailed support asking about the first question before xmas but never got a reply :(

Am i able to connect drives that are populated with data to the system but keep them separate from the array? And then when my array has enough space (i will be growing it gradually) allow me to copy from that drive onto the array (at which point i will add the now empty disk to the array)?

If i can keep the drive separate, can i share the data over the network still?

Also, i notice that the beta releases seem to have been going on since early last year. Is there any sign of a non-beta coming out? How often do non-beta releases normally appear? I can only see 4.7 from Jan 2011.

The number of beta releases for 5.0 and the span of time they have taken makes me a little wary. How buggy have these betas been?

Thanks.

On the first question:

Yes you can, on all accounts. You can add eSATA, USB, and other drives to your server, outside the array. And then share them on the network. Search for S.N.A.P. on the forum. I use it for adding USB and eSATA drives.  And also access them over the network. You can copy or move data from them in Midnight Commander or through the linux commands mv and cp.

I still use 4.7 and am very happy wih it but soon I will be upgrading to 5b14 because I want support for 3 TB drives. No need to worry about the many betas. Developing server software takes time: it has to be stable and you want your data safe.

Theres an application you can run called SNAP i believe that will do what you are asking, i have not used it myself but i was only reading the thread last night....

thanks dikkiedirk!

Do you know if you can add them internally also? I might have to have mine connected outside the array til the hard drive prices come down again. I have 3 disks i'd like to do this with and i don't have enclosures for them and don't particularly want all the clutter you get with external enclosures.

Also, it would be quicker transfers internally, even compared to esata from my experience.

----Just noticed this is answered in loady's link. Thanks.

I do want my data to be safe, that is precisely why all the betas made me wary. I assume that beta follows beta because issues keep arising.

Cheers.

Read the SNAP thread carefully, there are many tips and tricks there.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Significant changes with the kernel have caused these issues...believe that is why you also see many devices still using Linux 2.6.32 <check your phone ;) >
