[SOLVED] Initial setup - Does not show SATA drives

Featured Replies

This is my first time with unRaid.  I'm following the Configuration Tutorial here

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuration_Tutorial

I get to the part where I'm verifying hard drive detection.  I typed in "dmesg|grep SATA|grep link" and nothing happens.  It just gives me another blank prompt.  I have a Netcell PCI SATA card with 5 drives attached.  I'm using this motherboard:

http://reviews.cnet.com/motherboards/intel-server-board-se7210tp1/4507-3049_7-30828369.html?tag=mncol;subnav

It's also not detecting one of my ethernet ports.  The one that I believe is the gigabit port so that's another issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

[sOLVED-ish]

I guess I have settled on the conclusion that my 5 port Netcell PCI SATA card is not supported by unRAID.  I had another 4 port PCI SATA card that was hanging on post and would not boot up if any hard drives were attached to the card.  However, unRAID would recognize the card, and even recognize the HDDs if I plugged them in after boot.  The solutions was this...

I the bios turn off the "enable boot rom" for all slots except the one.needed for this adapter. I had the same problem on a supermicro motherboard.

The card was signaling to the motherboard that it was a bootable device, which was causing the system to freeze.  I disabled the ROM option on ALL my PCI ports and it worked great!

Sorry about that.  Got a little hasty.

I'm using unRaid 5.0 beta14

This is all that showed up when I clicked the log button in the web management window.

Ok, sorry... bear with me for a second.  I found the right file...

Edit: Ok, I've attached it.

I do not think that is one of the methods listed to get a copy of the system log.  (and if it is, please point me to where it was)

Please attach a zipped copy of the full syslog to your next post.  Unfortunately, the last few lines are nearly useless.

Looks to me like your Netcell PCI adapter is not recognized.

Thanks for looking at it for me.

Hmmmm, so I guess the only way around it is to use a different SATA card?

Or, if it is supported (and I have no idea if it is), to re-seat it and see if it is just a poor connection or a bad slot.

I've been using it for my raid array, so it has been working in windows.  I guess it's just not supported...

So here's a weird development.  I found another SATA card (silicon image 3114).  I installed the card without any drives plugged into the SATA ports.  It boots up and displays the empty ports when I do this command "dmesg|grep SATA|grep link".  I was thinking, "great! it's going to work!"

So I restart with the drives all plugged in (4 ports on this card).  Now the system freezes on the SATA card bios screen where it gives you info on how to enter the Raid Setup Utility and it won't let me enter it.  It won't boot if I have any drives plugged into it at all.  This is strange because I view this as a motherboard incompatibility, but I have used this card (and the other card) in a raid setup on this computer.

I've attached the syslog for when I booted up with no drives plugged into the SATA card.

Am I grasping at straws here?  Should I even try to use this motherboard anymore?  Is it just a SATA card issue?  I'm trying to decide if I should stay with this motherboard and get a AOC-SAT2-MV8.  Or if I should scrap it and get a new motherboard and a AOC-SAS-MV8

Any thoughts on this?  I'm really excited to get this working!

Hmmm, I didn't really get any ideas from that. :-\

you might need to take it out of raid mode.

Are you referring to the 4 port Sil3114 card that shows up in unRaid only when no drives are plugged in?  I've been trying to get into the bios for that card, but the bios screen only shows up when there is a drive plugged in.  It displays only one of the drives and then it freezes, not allowing me to get into the SATA/Raid setup screen or continue to the motherboard bios.  When there are no drives plugged in, it just bypasses the bios screen and continues to boot unRaid. Are there any jumpres that I can use to reset the bios to factory?

If you are referring to the 5 port Netcell card... I've tried all the settings I could find in the SATA/Raid bios.  This card is recognized fully by my motherboard and shows all drives on the SATA/Raid bios screen and it shows up as a bootable option in the motherboard bios.  It seems to me that the only problem with this card is that unRaid does not see it.  Other than that, it seems to be operating as expected.

I've been doing some more work and now I have everything working except the SATA cards.  Right now I have installed the 4 port Silicon Image 3114 SATA card.  There are no drives plugged into it.  When I boot, it flashes the SATA card post screen that says (below all the normal stuff):

"Device detected. Utility disabled ! press any key to continue..."

I haven't been able to get into the setup screen because the post flashes to quickly for me to hit Ctrl-s.

I know I'm posting a lot in my own thread, but I just got some more information.  If I leave the drives unplugged from the SATA card, boot up unRaid, and then plug the drives back in... they show up as usable.  So there is something stopping the motherboard from continuing to boot when the drives are plugged in.

I can't figure it out and it's driving me crazy!  I noticed there are spots for jumpers on the SATA cards.  Is there one that will reset it to factory defaults?

I the bios turn off the "enable boot rom" for all slots except the one.needed for this adapter. I had the same problem on a supermicro motherboard.

Ah, so that's what that "ROM" option means.  I will give that a try as soon as it's done zeroing my drives. That's a much better solution than what I was going to try to do.  That being try to yank the bios chip right off the SATA board.

If that doesn't work, I'm going to attempt to upgrade the bios via these instructions: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/asus-p3b-f-with-sil3114-pci-sata-raid-card-wont-boot-with-connected-hdd-382994/

That worked perfectly!  Thanks!
