February 4, 201214 yr Hi everyone, I wonder what type and quality SATA-cables you guys use. When you built a server with many drives you have to rely on just as many cables and having a bad cable can be a real PITA I think. Here in Holland you can choose from SATA I, II and III cables (Is there really a difference?) Ranging from 1.50 Euros to 25 Euros. Different lengths 30 cm to 1 m (1-3 foot) or even longer One side hooked or both sides straight. With or withouit metal clips. So what to choose?
February 4, 201214 yr Metal clips are good, won't come out as easy. Sata 2 is fine. I don't think there is a difference between sata 2 and sata 3 cables (Supposed to be better tolerances but I've read minor differences) Whether it is side hooked or straight doesn't really matter, just whatever is easier depending on your setup. I've just got the cheapest ones I could find. Josh
February 5, 201214 yr I've been using SATA cables since they came out and have not ever had one bad cable. Oddly, not until I came to Lime-Tech have I heard so much about checking/changing cables and all that. I don't think the cables are bad, I just think maybe unraid is very sensitive or something like that. I just grab the ones with locks on one end, from Monoprice.com
February 5, 201214 yr I use 26 AWG 30V 80degC Lead Free cables in every PC and server I build.... i think these are 1M or 750mm... i also have some that are like 4-6 inches.. What does that mean? I don't have a clue... but that's what I use... They are supermicro SATA cables and never failed me once. I get them free from work because we get a mountain of them with every supermicro chassis, mobo and backplane or cage we order... we tend to use SAS cables at work so the SATA cables end up in the trash... just make sure you seat them fully and if you start sticking fat hands inside a case, make sure you dont knock any loose. i have had the metal locking connectors pop off the locking cables and short things out. so careful with those. we once got in an IBM server that was shorted from the factory cause the tab was wedged into slot. the plastic locking tabs seem to be safer
