Power supply limitations?

Featured Replies

I'm about to add a new drive, and I'd like to know what are the limitations of my current power supply, and whether or not I should opt for a better one.

My current Norco 4224 build is using a OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W

specs: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010

My build has 3 7200RPM drives and 9 Green drives. I'm about to add another Green drive. Do you guys think I'm okay to do so?

If not, would the Corsair TX750W 750W that I currently have in my desktop be better? I'll swap them if necessary.

Thanks,

Scott

The corsair would be a much better fit, if you can swap them I would.

6 x peripheral

3 x SATA

So It's designed for 9 devices. You have 12.

If all of the molex connectors are on one cable then you may be close to maxing out a rail.

How are they laid out?

Chances are there is a dedicated rail for CPU, and one for video cards.

Your case is capable of 20 drives, I do not believe this PSU would be safe for 20 drives.

20X2.0a (although the forum suggests 3a) = 40a minimum for mixed green and 7200RPM drives.

IF (and notice the big if) the peripherals are spread between two rails you have 36a to work with.

IF it were me, I might try adding the new drive.

I would boot up. spin the drives down from emhttp. spin them up  (a couple times).

I would then do a parity check.

You may be able to get away with it.  You will probably start to have problems after 15 drives.

I might also try doing an mprime95 (see my googlecode page) which will tax the cpu heavily.

Then you'll know if you are going to have problems.

If you have spontaneous reboots, or shutdowns, or drives going offline, then you have to swap the PSU.

Frankly if you have that really nice corsar TX750W, I would swap it. unless there's a reason you are keeping it in the desktop.

The TX750 has a single 60a 12v rail.

You will be able to support the full 20 drives.

Thank you so much for the advice! I'll swap the two PSUs this weekend. I hope that and the upgrade from 5.0-beta14 goes smoothly.
