tdashnow Posted September 21, 2024 Posted September 21, 2024 I I recently tore down my working Unraid Plex server due to motherboard problems. I transferred my drives to a new PC built from new old stock components. However when I try to boot from my existing unraid usb stick it goes into a unending loop of usb errors. I did try booting it to a windows install usb and that appears to work normally and wants to install windows but I prefer Unraid. My screen scrolls by too quickly to make much sense of the errors but attached is a photo of part of the looping screen. I'm currently using a Gigabyte 970A-DS3P motherboard with a AMD FX-6300 and 32 MB of Ram Quote
JorgeB Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 Try a different flash drive with a stock install, no key needed, just to see if it boots. Quote
tdashnow Posted September 22, 2024 Author Posted September 22, 2024 I created a new flash drive and get the same result. I've also tried using the usb stick from my other Unraid server. In all three cases when the machine starts I get the boot menu as to which Unraid I want to boot to (I.e.. w/gui, w/o gui, safe mode. etc.) Regardless of which choice I make you see the scrolling command lines of unraid trying to boot but after a few seconds most of the scrolling lines are referring to usb errors as in my photo. This scrolling continues without end until I force a shutdown. As I previously said, booting with a Win 10 install flash drive works normally so I don't think it's a problem with the actual flash drives. I checked on updating my BIOS but there isn't an update available. My BIOS is currently set to support both UEFI and Legacy. I forgot to mention I'm using Unraid 6.12.13 Quote
JorgeB Posted September 22, 2024 Posted September 22, 2024 In that case it looks like a compatibility issue with Linux and the board/PC. Quote
Solution Espressomatic Posted September 22, 2024 Solution Posted September 22, 2024 (edited) These cover the issues I've had with other install media besides Unraid: Problems with media creation: How was the new boot USB made? Using the Unraid tool? Problem with USB Hub/port compatibility/accessibility: Have you tried all the USB ports on your system? Are any ports "extra" and can they be disconnected or disabled in BIOS? Other USB devices: What else do you have plugged in? BIOS config: Do you have Secure Boot enabled in the BIOS? Turn it off. BIOS config: Have you tried disabling UEFI and booting Legacy instead? Definitely try booting install media for some Linux distros rather than Windows. Debian, Ubuntu, etc. Edited September 22, 2024 by Espressomatic Quote
tdashnow Posted September 24, 2024 Author Posted September 24, 2024 Todays results All 3 boot usbs were created using the unraid tool. The only items plugged in were the usb stick, the mouse and keyboard. After trying all the ports I learned that when booting to Win10, all of my usb ports work. I created another boot usb as Expressomatic suggested, using Zoran. When booting with either Unraid or Zoran I was successful in getting both of them to boot but only on my 2 usb 3.0 ports. However as soon as either of them started to load ALL of my usb 2 ports died. This leaves me without enough ports for the boot stick, mouse and keyboard. I ordered a usb 3.0 card which will hopefully allow me to get by with this less than ideal situation until a better solution is found or I get a different motherboard. Some searching did show that this m/b did suffer from problems concerning it's usb ports so JorgeB may be correct. My m/b doesn't appear to have a secure boot mode and my results were the same in UEFI or Legacy. Thank you both for your input. Quote
tdashnow Posted September 24, 2024 Author Posted September 24, 2024 I got the usb 3.0 card installed. This appears to be a working answer. While not happy that my new server has a limited set of usb ports at least they're 3.0 and this PC will be used as my backup server so most I/O will be done via the network. Good enough... Thanks again 1 Quote
