Parity drive failing .... I think

Featured Replies

FYI - newbie alert

I have been running V5 beta 14 for a while with no issues. While playing around with couchpotato, etc., I had the array become unresponsive. I think I saw some memory issues as I was trying to do a lot of downloading with sabnzbd/couchpotato, copying other files to the array. etc.

Upon reboot, I saw that the system went into the parity check routine, since the array was not gracefully shut down. I saw many parallel reads on all discs ... presume this is what was happening.

The problem is that the reads on all discs have stopped (typical number on a 1 TB drive was 2606478 reads), the webgui still says 'starting'. The array is definitely not on line and seems to be hung up. I have tried to do a power down/up a couple of times with the same results.

I reviewed all of the disks smart status reports and the only one that seems to be complaining is the parity drive. I have attached the parity drive smart status report and the syslog.

So, in the state it is in (parity check stopped, array not on line), is it safe to do a smart test or file system check (from unmenu) on the parity disc?

Or, are there any other checks I can do?

Finally, if the parity disc is pooched, will the normal parity disc replacement instructions work? I don't want to damage the array - loads of data on it that I need to retain.

Thanks in advance,

Brian

Parity drive was replaced, rebuild process seemed to go OK.

Now the array is stuck at the 'starting' stage under array status.

All drives are green (including parity) and green ball in front of starting.

I don't see any activity on any of the discs when I refresh (no reads/writes).

Any ideas where to go now for troubleshooting?

Cheers,

Brian

Same as always, post a current syslog.

After a reboot or 2, the array came back online. I did not see any obvious errors in the syslog, but it is attached. I have also attached a report from a drive that seems to be failing.

Just want a bit of advice ... should I be repacing the drive that is showing all the errors?

Also, is there a good explanation somewhere of all the data that comes from the smart report - specifically, the error attributes?

Regards,

Brian

These two indicate media errors:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   100   100   036    Pre-fail  Always       -       3
197 Current_Pending_Sector  0x0012   100   100   000    Old_age   Always       -       0

A failed read causes cause a sector to be considered pending and the Pending Sector count increases. The next write to the sector causes the Pending count to decrease. If the write is not successful the Reallocated count goes up.

Does this disk still show errors?

If the reallocated count continues to rise then replace this disk.
