Hello Everyone,

Before posting this here, I've checked on Google, reddit and read a bunch of posts, but none of them helped in my instance, if this was discussed already, please can you point me in the right direction?

5-6 weeks ago, when setting up my server, I've setup notifications, via email, telegram and pushover, originally this did not work, but after restarting the server, they started working!.

I've soft restarted the server a couple of days later and since then, for the past 5 weeks, no notification have been sent/received. I've restarted the server several time since, and never managed to get one single notification from any of the enabled services other than the tests.

When I click the test button, each of them produces a test email or push notification respectively.

I've tried disabling, re-enabling, replying to the telegram notifications, re-configuring, restarting, etc... but nothing is working...does anyone know what else I can do and how I can fix this without loosing all the plugins, containers, configurations, etc... although, with the only exception of the data on the drives which I would prefer not to lose ( have it backed up) I could start from scratch.

Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to read this and help.

Do you get GUI notifications? Just not external?

Thanks Jorge, yes, I get notifications in the top right of the GUI, but nothing sent externally.

Everything looks OK to me, if the GUI notifications work and the email test also works, I'm afraid that I don't see a reason for you not getting them, did you check the spam folder?

  • Author

Yes, nothing in the spam folder, also, I get the test email. On top, I also get zero notifications via telegram or pushover. Once again though, I get the test notifications…

It’s very annoying…

what would be my next step?

I would try with a new flash drive using a stock install, no key needed, just to test and confirm if it's a config issue or an external problem.

Thanks, will create a trial usb key and give it a go. Will let you know later.

Hi Jorge,

So done the following, downloaded 6.12.13 on a blank usb stick as a trial, setup just notifications, correctly received tests, but no notifications.

Then downloaded 6.12.11 (this is also the version I started building my server, same results as with 6.12.13. Correctly received tests, but no notifications.

Lastly downloaded 6.12.9: Telegram notifications working correctly. After a system restart still working.

Decided to upgrade 6.12.9 tp 6.12.13: after the upgrade reboot, telegram notifications still working fine. Then setup Pushover, also these working fine. After a restart, all still working fine.

To me, this seems to be a bug on new configurations on 6.12.11 and 6.12.13, since upgrading to these versions from 6.12.9 allowed notifications to continue working fine. Would be good if somebody else, could test this too before I report it as a bug or do you think this can be reported straight away?

Thanks

P.

And it as the same with email notifications, or just the agents?

  • Author

Same results with email, telegram and pushover. Haven’t tried anything else.

thanks

Seems odd it would be a but or I would expect more reports, but will try to test myself when I can.

Thanks. Obviously this is my 2 cents, but unless there’s an option or something else I disabled/enabled by mistake or is enabled/disabled on the latest versions and not on the older ones and which I’m not aware of, then to me, the only two options once I exclude the hardware, is either a bug or poor software code consistency.

I’m wondering, is it possible for me to start from scratch using an old version without losing the data on the disks and the shares? I can then rebuild permissions, plugins, docker containers, etc… but would prefer to avoid the pain to have to move the data again.

In general, so far, I’m not overly impressed with UNRAID, especially given it’s price and the yearly tax: random spin ups or no spin downs with zero activity, each restart seems to mess up something (today some plugins were disabled for some reason), the notifications issues, shares access issues, write performance drops…it feels like it’ll be a lot of work to keep it going and I haven’t event started setting up Plex and other services. I truly hope I’m wrong.

It is, you just need to assign the disks again as they were, or copy super.dat from the /config folder on the flash drive, if you want to keep the share settings, you can also copy /config/shares

Thanks Jorge, will give it a go.

When you will have time to test this, please let me know your results.

Thanks

Just did a test, started with a stock 6.12.13 install, configured notifications to use Gmail and it worked:

So not sure what the issue could be

I’m lost at this point.

would a screen recording help? I can start fresh again and go through the setup. Maybe I’m doing something obvious.

have you tried getting a notification after restarting?

No, but I can test in half an hour or so.

Still works after a reboot.

Hi Jorge,

Thanks again for your help. I think I got to the bottom of it.

When I tested the server yesterday, I didn't receive an email notification but did get Test alerts from Telegram and Pushover. I found that disconnecting the UPS triggered a browser notification, but no email or agent notifications were sent or received.

After fixing the email authentication issue, both email and agent notifications started working without any additional changes.

Finding this odd, On my "production" Unraid server, which hadn't sent notifications in weeks, I noticed that the email randomly threw authentication errors. Sometimes it would work, and other times it wouldn’t, leading to "Authentication Failed." (I would push the button to send a test and everything worked fine, pushing the button 10/15 minutes later, would get me "Authentication Failed"). After switching to a Gmail account, and got a successful email test, notifications resumed from email, Telegram, and Pushover.

As I believed I was onto something,  I've built a fresh 6.12.13 trial usb and I found the following:

  • No email configured: Browser, Telegram, and Pushover notifications worked fine.
  • Email configured correctly: All notifications worked (email, browser, Telegram, Pushover).
  • Incorrectly configured email with authentication issues: Browser notifications worked, but email, Telegram, and Pushover did NOT.

Each time I was able to replicate the above, and it feels like to me that the notification service stops, when email notifications throw an error without proceeding to send the notifications via the agents. Do you know if this is by design?

What do you think of the above?

Thanks again for your help.

Good investigating, I can also duplicate.

I don't know, but will try to find out, and post an update here.

Hi Folks,

Thanks again for the report and help in investigating this. Our team was able to reproduce the issue and this will be resolved in the next release.

@JorgeB thanks for all your help.
@NickdotB that’s great to hear, glad to know we were able to help identify a bug and improve Unraid.

This issue should be resolved in both 6.12.15 and 7.0.0
