October 15, 20241 yr Hi there, After identifying that my HDDs mounted in a Norco drive cage were not getting enough cooling, my son & I opened up the server, disconnected the SATA cables and the molex cables and replaced the fan in each cage (got 2 cages and a total of 8 data drives & 1 parity drive. We were careful to mark the cables so were could reconnect them properly once the fans were replaced, and after reconnecting all the cables and ensuring the new fans were spinning we closed up the side panels and I tried to connect via the webgui. The connection timed out. I connected up a monitor directly to the server and rebooted to try to see any messages that could give a clue as to the issue. For a start the server usually boots into the Unraid system within 30 seconds (ish) of booting - just after giving a chance to go into the BIOS, but it's not doing that any more and it kind of got stuck. I manually went into the boot menu to manually choose the Unraid USB stick, and then Unraid launched (I might need to revisit the boot issue later, but it's not my biggest problem right now. After watching the screeds of code typical of an Unraid start-up, I noticed Unraid get stuck at the point where an error message was showing... sdb: sdb1 sd 1:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk ata2: COMRESET failed (errno=-32) ata2: reset failed (errno=-32), retrying in 8 secs It shows this a number of times and then it gives up and moves on. This is WAY out of my depth - all I know is something serious is wrong and I need to get it fixed before proceeding. Help! I've turned the server off at this point, and I'll leave the monitor attached as that's the only feedback I have at this point. Please let me know if there's any further data I need to retrieve (and how to get it) to get to the root cause of the problem, and thanks in advance for any attempts to find the issue!

October 15, 20241 yr Author Great sensible procedure! Thanks JorgeB! Disconnecting all drives I was able to get Unraid to boot, and then shut down and added each drive in - one at a time, until all were connected and found in the correct location. The only thing we did find was one of the molex connectors providing power to the lower cage had had one of its 'pin slots' pushed out the back of the connector. Once we'd checked all drives were connected without issue, we shutdown one last time, re-seated the pin, re-connected and fired up the server without any further issues. Thanks again for stepping in with a calm, clear head! Much appreciated.
