parity/disk errors

Featured Replies

ok, i had to shutdown the server yesterday, power outage, ups kept it live while i loged in, stoped, and shutdown.

After starting back up, it started a parity sync. Odd i thought, but meh, it had been 2-3months since i last did one, and it was already 20% though by the time i realised, so i let it go.

Now i've receieved i belive 1 parity sync error and 121 parity disk errors, if i'm reading it right. Would like it if someone could check for me. If the 121 errors, are disk errors i'll pull it out and check the cable on the parity drive, well i'll replug all the cables, and run another parity?

The parity drive is having problems. Post a SMART report for parity. How are you shutting down?

i shutdown through the web interface.

here is the smart report.. i did it though unmenu. clicked short smart test, then clicked smart status report 10 mins later

After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

The drive does not look healthy. Try to reseat the cables and then do another check. If that fails then you can enter "initconfig" to invalidate parity. Parity will be recreated when the array is started. This will write to the entire disk causing the pending sector to be resolved.

The short test aborted on the first read failure.

It marked the sector as pending re-allocation.

ok i'll pull it out and reset the cable, and do another smart test? or do that  initconfig thing?

You should be able to just perform a correcting parity check and not mess with cables or invalidating parity.  When it gets to the un-readable sector, unRAID should detect the failure and re-write that sector.

A single bad sector will result in the 121 read failures you saw initially.

My suggestion, before you go invalidating parity, just press the "Check" button on the web-interface and let it perform a correcting parity check.

ok joe i'll let it do another parity sync

  • Author

ok been away for the last few days so havn't manage to report but.. i did the sync again.. had no syn errors but had another 125 disk errors. so the web gui is showing 250 errors atm.

did another short test and report

the system han't been restarted at all since the initial power failure, either, so if i needed to do a restart before doing another smart test, then yea...
