When is a drive empty?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Me again - a noob Unraid user.

So I’m trying to clear a drive down to remove as it’s failing. I’ve managed to use “Unbalance” to move folders away from the offending drive.

If I open the offending drive it shows 0 folders and 0 files, but in the “Main” overview it says 20Tb is being used.

Why is this, and how can I be sure it’s totally clear from data that I might need so I can safely remove it?

Many thanks,

Richard.

Are you sure about this number?

You spotted my obvious error.. sorry it says 20Gb!

Still a lot though!

That is about the amount of space required for the file structure and its tables by most modern file systems.  This space is reserved and allocated at the time when the disk is formatted.

Ah ok - that makes sense.

So as long as when I open the drive and it confirms “0 files, 0 folders” I’m basically safe to proceed removing the drive from my system.

This forum is brilliant. Thank you!
