[Solved] Moving unRAID install to another USB drive

Featured Replies

Background (you can skip this...)

So I got my microserver the other day and it came with a 2gb usb stick which I used for unRAID. After preclearing a drive, for some reason I decided actually I want to try FlexRAID on Linux (don't do it, it's just not stable on Linux) and as I pulled the unRAID memory stick out before I set up the FlexRAID system, it died. So now I have to use my much larger 16gb drive which I'd rather not leave stuck in a server as I like to use it for music for my car stereo.  It's only a Play.com branded one from a couple of years ago but for some reason it's seriously fast.

Anyway, I'm coming back to unRAID and temporarily using my 16gb memory stick while I wait for my new 8gb Voyager to arrive (hopefully it fits in my microserver, it looks kinda long). I still want to use the server in the meantime so ideally I'd like to set it all up on my current usb stick, and then when my new one arrives, transfer my install to that.

So, my question is:

Is it possible to transfer my unRAID install from one drive to another without any issues, and if so how would I go about it? My assumption is, I just format the new stick to have the same partitions as the old one, copy my entire directory structure over, and make it bootable.

Note: I'm using unRAID free for now as obviously if I bought a licence key it would be tied to a temporary stick.

I believe you could just copy the config folder, but copying all files should work too.

Ah, thanks. Would only copying the config folder not cause conflicts with installed packages? i.e. would it not be best to at least copy the whole /boot directory?

Just copy the whole flash disk content and run syslinux on new flash. Be sure to check the flash disk recommendation list for UNRAID and use one of those. I used to have many issues with bad flash disks.

Yes, if you have installed other stuff besides just unRAID then you'll have to copy the whole flash drive.

What do I do if I have upgraded to unraid plus? Can I move the key to new thumb drive?

limetech usually accommodates paying customers with a new key for a new flash drive if their old one dies.
