[Solved] User shares gone missing.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am running 4.7 and my user shares are not in the web gui or when browsing.  The shares are under mnt/user0 but not mnt/user (I did read some previous posts on this issue).  I see no errors in the logs.  The drive shares are showing up when I browse the network and I can still see my data thankfully.  I did try 2 reboots.  I tried re-creating my TV share but it was empty when I browsed it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

user0 is the contents of the shares on the array drives only. user includes the array and cache. So, since user0 works and user doesn't, I would do a file system check on the cache drive.

According to the log, the cache drive is sda so use /dev/sda1 instead of the /dev/md1 like in the example.

Thanks for the response.  I think it could be the other way around.  When I browse the network I can see Disk1, disk2, etc, cache, but not the user shares.  I did the reiserfsck on my cache drive as suggested, but did not see any errors (it is also empty).  I enclosed the results.  Any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks

Try un-assigning the cache drive.

To spend more time and give you more info. Here are the relevant lines from the log;

Feb 26 16:36:06 Tower emhttp: shcmd (53): mkdir /mnt/user
Feb 26 16:36:06 Tower emhttp: shcmd (54): /usr/local/sbin/shfs /mnt/user -cache 1 -floor 150 gig -o noatime,big_writes,allow_other,default_permissions
Feb 26 16:36:06 Tower emhttp: _shcmd: shcmd (54): exit status: 1
Feb 26 16:36:06 Tower emhttp: shcmd (55): mkdir /mnt/user0
Feb 26 16:36:06 Tower emhttp: shcmd (56): /usr/local/sbin/shfs /mnt/user0 -cache 0 -o noatime,big_writes,allow_other,default_permissions

user is the user shares including the cache and the mount attempt exited with an failure. The user0 mount attempt worked. So, I can't tell you why, but the cache is the problem. Google search "exit status" and you'll see that 0 means success and 1 means failure. Also, it doesn't hurt that I saw the exact same problem before with another user.

So, if the reiserfsck is OK then look for corrupt files on the disk - possibly delete any content and then stop and start the array and see if it works. If that fails, then worst case you could try wiping the MBR and re-adding it or preclearing the drive and re-adding it. I'm thinking a preclear might show some issue with the drive.

Thank You.  It is something to do with the cache drive.  I remove it from devices and I get my user shares back.  I add it back and my shares go away.  How can I delete the MBR or do some kind of quick format as pre-clearing a 2TB drive takes 24-30 hours.

Thanks again

Joe

Read the preclear script thread. There is a command line switch to only clear the MBR.

I will, thanks.  I decided to pull the drive and do a low level format using HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.12.  I have used this before to take care of drives and usually works really well even to straighten out the WD20EARS jumper / no jumper issues.

Just to wrap up.  Even though the cache drive was empty, it was some how screwed up, preventing my user shares from mounting.  I took out the drive, low level formatted it, put it back in the server, it came up as unformatted in the web gui, I formatted it in the web gui, and now is all right in the world.

Thank you for all of the assistance.

Not Solved.  After formatting the cache drive I noticed that the user shares were not using it as copying to them was slower than usual.  I stopped and started the array thinking that may help and once again the user shares are gone.  I replaced the 2TB cache with a 500GB laying around and same thing.  The array saw the unformatted cache drive, I formated it, but user shares did not use it (I checked the cache drive to see if files I was copying whee landing there, and it was empty.  Stopped and started the array and user shares are gone again.  It seems that the cache drive is maybe a symptom but not the underlying cause.

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks again

Joe

Maybe the power connector or the SATA port is causing problems?

As for not using it, you may have to redo the "use cache drive" setting for each share when it's put back in place.

Tried different slot + drive for cache, same result.  I can not change the cache settings on the shares as the user shares do not show on the gui when cache is configured and when cache is not configured there is no cache setting on on the shares.  Catch 22.

Doing a parity check.  I will check back in after it is done. Probably late tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks

Completed a parity check finding 1500 corrected errors.  However, as long as I have a cache drive configured the user shares are gone.  Where can I go from here?

Thanks

I think this is finally solved for now, even though I am not really sure what was going on.  I followed the instructions in the link you posted http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Check_Disk_Filesystems and this time did it on all 9 of my data drives with the fix command.  Each one came back with no problems found.  I then started the array and almost died.  All of my drives but one came back as unformatted.  I shut down the array, rebooted, set the shares to use the cache drive and everything is working now.

Thanks for all of the help

unformatted simple indicates the disks were not mounted (and since you had un-mounted then, entirely expected)

rebooting got them all mounted again.
