April 22, 200818 yr I've been searching for a few 1TB drives lately and found that Newegg every now and then has open box drives. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136151R To me as long as it has a warranty I'll try it. So for 139.99 not bad originally 209.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136151 Tip: On newegg search for "1TB" then on the left narrow the search to $100-$200. That's how I found the drives this time.
April 22, 200818 yr Thanks for posting! Couldn't resist at this price ($0.14 per gig)! I previously bought some Seagate "open box" drives from Newegg. They came in factory sealed bags. Their smartctl data indicated no errors of any kind and almost no power on time. They've worked flawlessly. Hope these are same. You only get a few days to test them out and return them to Newegg, so if you buy make sure you are prepared to begin testing immediately. Otherwise, if you have a problem, you'd have to deal with the manufacturer.
April 22, 200818 yr Thanks Erik, in for two. I will say that Western Digital has made warranty replacement very easy these days. I recently returned a drive to them. I printed out the UPS shipping bill on the Western Digital website ($6.81) and dropped it off at the UPS store. I estimate it took 30 minutes of my time all told. If you return a drive to Newegg you loose out on the great deal. Scott
