April 23, 200818 yr I'm having some trouble getting the ldlinux.sys to appear after running syslinux.exe. I've down the following: -downloaded the exe file and moved it to the root of my C: drive -put in a USB drive and it showed up as drive F. -ran the c:\syslinux.exe f: No ldlinux.sys showed up on the drive. As a test, I also created a TEST folder on the C drive root. WHen I ran c:\syslinux.exe c:\test nothing showed up either. I"m feeling kind of stupid...help!
April 23, 200818 yr It is flagged System and Hidden, do you have your file manager set to show those?
April 23, 200818 yr also re-do with c:\syslinux.exe -ma f: This has nothing to do with the hidden file. It has to do with setting the MBR and partition active.
April 23, 200818 yr Author Sorry...meant to say that I've got hidden files viewable I've also looked into the directory under the DOS prompt and don't see anything.
April 23, 200818 yr Sorry...meant to say that I've got hidden files viewable I've also looked into the directory under the DOS prompt and don't see anything. you need to enable the showing of not just hidden, but hidden files AND system files. Not sure about the DOS prompt... I would have expected to see the files there. Does your USB Flash drive have U3 software on it? (you will need to remove it if it does) Does it have a hidden partition? That might be where the syslinux.cfg is ending up. Are you sure that "f:" is the USB drive? Lastly, I'm not sure, but running syslinux on c:/test was probably a VERY BAD IDEA. I hope it figured out that c:/test was not a valid drive, since it might make it impossible to boot windows normally. You'll soon find out, when you try to reboot your PC. If it fails to boot, there is always fdisk /mbr c: Which will re-write the master boot record for drive "C" (Don't use this unless you cannot boot your PC, in which case, boot from a recovery floppy and then use it on drive "C") Good luck. Joe L.
April 23, 200818 yr Wow Joe, that was post #999 !!! Going to do something special for the big 1K ? Many thanks for a long history of great posts !!!
April 23, 200818 yr Author Thanks everyone! I have a feeling it was there all along (just didn't have system files showing), but it's definitely on there now. Unfortunately, it's not booting. I'm running it off of a kingston data traveler 4gb and plugging it into a Epox 9npa+ Ultra mobo.

Is it set as the boot device in your BIOS? Does it have U3 software installed on it, it will need to be removed. Lots to check before you give up. Joe L.
April 23, 200818 yr Author Definitely not giving up! I did use the -ma option to syslinux and used the HP tool to format the flash drive. In my BIOS I set the boot to Removable and disabled all others. I also tried using EZBoot to select removable - nothing worke. No U3 software installed. Thanks for all the help for the noob. i have run various flavors of Ubuntu on this machine, so I'm pretty sure it's a stable linux platform (even though i've read all the nightmares of nforce4 on this forum)

Another thing to check it to make sure that "removable" is the right choice for you motherboard. In my BIOS (a Gigabyte board), my flash drive shows up as a hard drive.

Try setting it to boot from a disk, and then choose the flash drive from the list of disks to boot from. (My motherboard treats it in that way) When you attempt to boot, what do you see on the system console?

I am planning to build an unRAID server using the exact same motherboard (when my new computer arrives), and have just for testing purposes succesfully booted unRAID server 4.3 beta6 on my Epox 9npa+ Ultra using a Sony Micro Vault Tiny 2 GB stick. (I had to change the boot device order in the BIOS setup of course to 'Removable' or something. My system is running the 18 April 2006 BIOS ) When formatting the Sony 2 GB stick I just used the "standard" Windows-in-built functionality. In fact I just followed the instructions here: http://lime-technology.com/wordpress/?page_id=46 Although I did use the -ma option when running syslinux.exe
