March 14, 201214 yr Hi I was wondering if anyone has had success setting up VMServer or VirtualBox (or any other virtual machine alternative) on a stock UnRaid 5.0 box? There seems to be lots of options for older versions of UnRaid, but they all seem to require custom dev build machines to setup. Thanks Kevin
March 15, 201214 yr why not go the other way? Install ESXi and run UnRaid as a VM. Probably because of the hardware that is required to do that.

Also I have a fully working UnRaid 5.0 server in constant use and I don't want to risk that if I can help it. So installing virtual machines on top of UnRaid sounds a lot safer and easier than the other way around.

Well, hardware aside - as to stability, its arguable that dropping vm's within unraid would introduce more issues than literally taking your unraid USB and booting a vm directly from that in a bare metal visor, as the flash drive you have configured currently can be used back and forth with no additional complications from shoehorning vm hosting into unraid. That all being said, hardware is the major limiting factor, since without passthrough of a card for the drives, running an unraid guest becomes a much more difficult/untenable proposition. In any case, on the very slim off chance that you have a vt-d/IOMMU capable setup and a controller to pass through, it is at least a lot of fun!
