March 22, 201214 yr Hi there, my thumb drive died a couple of days ago so I built a new one and got a new key file from lime support, which is great - now the server is back up and running ok. But the drives are messed up (I think!) and I'm scared I'm about to lose gigs of important data, so I want to be really careful before I proceed.. My parity drive is showing as a green dot as is the first drive in my system, but there's no other drives listed as missing on the main page, then when I do try and allocate some using the devices tab, they show as blue dots.. I'm thinking it doesn't know that they are actually part of my array. I think I must have restored an older backup of the usb key that had a different drive configuration stored on it (just guessing) Any help would be most appreciated! -Adam.
March 22, 201214 yr Do not assign a drive to the parity slot yet, assign all the drives to data slots, then start the array. Hopefully only one drive will show unformatted, and that one should be your parity drive. If that is the case, you can then assign the parity drive, and rebuild parity, followed by a non correcting parity check to make sure everything is good. The new install has no way of knowing that your parity disk is actually valid, so assuming you have no failing or failed data drives that you want to recover, it's best to recalculate parity from scratch. IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE A BAD DATA DRIVE, STOP, DON'T DO ANYTHING WITHOUT FURTHER ADVICE.
March 23, 201214 yr Author Awesome, thanks for your advice. I've successfully managed to find a screenshot I took of my drive allocations and configured and started the array successfully. Everything appears normal and it's performed a parity check successfully. I just noticed however when I reboot the machine that it's giving an error about a failing drive. Can I trust my parity information now to replace that drive? ie ran a full parity check so I'm assuming it should be all ok now? (All drives show a green dot) Cheers
