March 23, 201214 yr I have narrowed it down to 2 options: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0059DAN2I/sr=1-11/qid=1331394021/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1331394021&sr=1-11&seller= http://www.amazon.de/APC-Smart-UPS-unterbrechungsfreie-Notstromversorgung-PowerChute/dp/B00006BBKA/ref=sr_1_1?s=ce-de&ie=UTF8&qid=1332493739&sr=1-1 The APC is an older model which has been replaced by the SMT series. apcuspd.org isn't too fond of these SMTs, because you have to add in an additional interface card. The Cyberpower has more "bling-bling" like a fancier display and so, but I lean towards the APC. Which one would you guys pick?
March 23, 201214 yr ...I just ordered this: http://www.amazon.de/Eaton-Ellipse-1600-Wechselstrom-230V/dp/B0056PDK9C/ref=sr_1_4?s=ce-de&ie=UTF8&qid=1332537974&sr=1-4 Very simple & basic offline UPS but powerful. I don't have a problem with quality (voltage) of supply here at my place but short drop-outs are coming more frequent than they used to in the past. My hope is to run the server for more than 30-45mins with it. ..don't know if it will work with apcuspd, though.
March 24, 201214 yr Author I live in Holland and I don't know if Eaton is available here, so far choice is rather limited here. It would be a nice alternative to the ones I mentioned. Gonna check this one out too! I hope apcupsd supports it.
March 24, 201214 yr ....the Eaon UPS will not work with apcupsd..it will work with nuts; http://www.networkupstools.org/. They do list a place, serving Holland, here: http://powerquality.eaton.com/EMEA/Products-services/Services/contact.asp
March 25, 201214 yr Author Is nuts workable in Unraid? Or does Unraid only work with apcupsd? It's hard to sort out the options without proper knowledge.
March 25, 201214 yr Is nuts workable in Unraid? Or does Unraid only work with apcupsd? It's hard to sort out the options without proper knowledge. nuts will work on just about any Linux distribution. unRAID is a stripped down Linux distribution. There is no reason "nuts" will not work on unRAID. The ONLY reasons most use apcupsd are: 1. it is not a bad brand of UPS. In fact, I have a number of their larger SmartUPS in my house. (1000 VA to 1400 VA in size) 2. It is a widely available brand 3. there was a pre-compiled Slackware package for it. 3. I created a unMENU package that could be installed easily for it. (and I created an unMENU package manager with data entry fields to assist in installing it and many other packages. Most people will not have to edit any files by hand to install apcupsd) "nuts"can handle more UPS types. As such, there is more to its configuration on a specific server for a given brand of UPS. If you can find a pre-compiled "Slackware package" for "nuts" odds are very high it will work just as well as apcupsd. It will need to be configured for your UPS and it will need to tie into the /sbin/powerdown script (or something like it) to properly stop the unRAID server before and actual power down in an extended outage A google search for "slackware nut package" returned this pre-compiled package for it as a possibility: http://slack.isper.sk/pub/slackware-12.2/utilities/nut/14.4/ You'll need to download and install the nut-14.4-i486-1sl.tgz file. by typing the following two commands: wget -O nut-14.4-i486-1sl.tgz http://slack.isper.sk/pub/slackware-12.2/utilities/nut/14.4/nut-14.4-i486-1sl.tgz installpkg nut-14.4-i486-1sl.tgz Then, you'll need to configure it for your UPS. Just also install the "powerdown" package, and in the "nuts" configuration have it invoke /sbin/powerdown before actually shutting power off to the server.
March 25, 201214 yr Author Thanks Joe, I don't wanna go experimenting like that. I rather stick with the unmenu package or plugin of apcupsd. For ease of use and because, as you say, availability of APS UPSes.
