December 16, 20241 yr Version: UNRAID 6.12.8 Hello! I've got myself in a bit of a bind - any help is appreciated. One of my drives ("Disk 6") crapped out on me (it's unuseable), so I swapped it out with another. On the Array Devices page, it currently says "Wrong" next to this (expected, because I need to update it). However, a different drive ("Disk 2") says "Device is disabled, contents emulated". My parity seems ok (I think?). How do I get Disk 2 to play nice, so I can rebuild Disk 6? Diagnostics attached. Thank you! unraid-diagnostics-20241216-1634.zip
December 17, 20241 yr Community Expert When did disk2 get disabled? You can rebuild with single parity and two invalid disks.
December 17, 20241 yr Author @JorgeB I'm not sure at what point Disk 2 got disabled - is there a way to check that? How do I rebuild with 2 invalid disks? I don't see the option on the "Array Operation" page ("Start" is greyed out. The only other option is Safe Mode) Thank you! Edited December 17, 20241 yr by RikkiTikkiTavi

Only if you saved the diags, also, don't you have system notifications enabled? 1 hour ago, RikkiTikkiTavi said: How do I rebuild with 2 invalid disks? It's not possible with single parity, if disk2 got disabled now you could try force enable it to rebuild the other disks, but if it's been disabled for a long time, most likely that's won't work now.
January 4, 20251 yr Author Ok, I've been trying to figure out a solution to this, and I'm pretty lost in the woods. At this point I'm just looking to get it up and running with whatever data I can. It's a bit of a mess. Here's a recap of what I started with: Disk 6's connector was damaged, so I needed to replace it Disk 2 had been disabled at some point without me realizing it, so its contents were emulated and I was unable to simply swap out Disk 6 Disk 3 was fine at this point (this is important later) To try to solve this, I found a way to temporarily reconnect Disk 6. Disk 6 returned to normal operation I re-added Disk 2 as a new device and tried a data rebuild on Disk 2. However, this finished with a 'cancelled' status I opened up the server, and it turns out one of Disk 3's cables had become damaged (I'm aware this is a larger issue, but for now I'm focused on trying to get things back to whatever functional state I can) I replaced the cable on Disk 3 and reconnected, but Disk 3 is now disabled Before I realized Disk 3 was disabled, I added a new drive to replace Disk 2, hoping I could re-try the rebuild on a fresh disk So now: Disk 6 is normal Disk 2 has no disk assigned (with the fresh drive ready to be assigned) Disk 3 is now disabled I know that nothing has been added to Disk 3 since it went down. Ideally I could just re-enable it so I can do a data rebuild on Disk 2 to get things back up and running so I can start more long-term fixes. However, all of the solutions I've found for getting re-enabling Disk 3 don't seem like they'll work with Disk 2 also disabled. I'm aware this is a trainwreck, and I apologize. I'm pretty over my head and looking for any guidance at this point. Do I have any options here? Or am I SOL? Thanks! unraid-diagnostics-20250104-1320.zip
January 5, 20251 yr Community Expert You can try this, but it will only work if parity is still valid: -Tools -> New Config -> Retain current configuration: All -> Apply -Check all assignments and assign any missing disk(s) if needed, including the new disk2, replacement disk should be same size or larger than the old one -IMPORTANT - Check both "parity is already valid" and "maintenance mode" and start the array (note that the GUI will still show that data on parity disk(s) will be overwritten, this is normal as it doesn't account for the checkbox, but it won't be as long as it's checked) -Stop array -Unassign disk2 -Start array (in normal mode now) and post the diagnostics.
January 5, 20251 yr Author Thanks for replying! Just to check before I do anything - if i do this and the parity isn't valid, will anything be overwritten? Or will I essentially be back where I'm currently at if the parity isn't valid?

January 7, 20251 yr Author Good gravy, I just can't seem to catch a break here. I ran the "New Config" tool, with Preserve Assignments set to "All". I checked my drive assignments, and assigned the missing drive for Disk 2... and noticed that Disk 5 is now missing - it says "Device Not Present", and the drive is unassigned. It was present immediately before running the New Config. My assumption is I should shut down the tower and check my cables, but I wanted to check in and make sure that there won't be any issues shutting down at this point in the process. Updated diags attached. unraid-diagnostics-20250107-0852.zip

It's fine to shutdown now, then check connections.
January 19, 20251 yr Author Ok, all of the drives are being seen by UNRAID now. I did these steps: I ran "New Config" with preserve assignments set to "All" I assigned the missing drive for Disk 2 I started the array with "Parity is already valid" and "Maintenance Mode" both checked I stopped the array and unassigned Disk 2 I started the array (with Disk 2 disabled) Diagnostics are attached. Thanks! unraid-diagnostics-20250119-1348.zip
January 19, 20251 yr Community Expert Emulated disk2 is mounted and shows 1.7TB of data. Should be good to rebuild disk2. Remind us to investigate the lost+found share on disk6 after rebuild. (Some of your appdata is also on disk6).
January 28, 20251 yr Author The drama continues! I started a rebuild a little over a week ago, and it was going alright at first, but after a few days the estimated finish jumped up to 200+ days. Any tips as to what might be causing it? Do I have a bad connection or cable somewhere? Is the replacement drive bad? (I grabbed a spare out of storage, but maybe it's also funky). unraid-diagnostics-20250128-1506.zip
January 29, 20251 yr Community Expert Disk2 has disconnected. How are these powered? Any splitters? Ideally no more than 4 drives per PSU cable. Each plug, power and SATA, both ends, should sit squarely and firmly on the connection, with no tension on the cable that might disturb connection. Don't bundle data cables to try to make things "neat".
January 29, 20251 yr Community Expert Have you tried replacing cable? 4 hours ago, RikkiTikkiTavi said: Do I have a bad connection or cable somewhere? Is the replacement drive bad? Can't see SMART for disk2 because it is disconnected. Post new diagnostics after fixing connections.
