First build - Start with 4.7 or jump into beta

Featured Replies

My parts are en route, I'll be starting off with a simple 3 HDD 1 parity 2 data due to the high cost on HDDs at the moment. With this being the first initial setup I guess my question is would the preferred route be 4.7 and just wait for final release of 5 or should I just go ahead and do my initial setup with the most recent beta 5.0 b14?

This is going to be used exclusively for a media server containing primarily movies, TV series, music, and some photos here and there. I'm planning on upgrading to pro once I can afford more HDDs. From what I've read on upgrading from basic to pro that's not a big deal and shouldn't require rebuilding drives so that's good. I'm assuming (hoping) the same goes with upgrading your version of unRAID as long as you shutdown and update your flash drive. It would appear to be a pretty painless process according to the wiki -  http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=UnRAID_Server_Version_5.0-beta_Release_Notes

A lot of time investment has went into sorting, labeling, collecting, etc. for all of my content so my biggest concern is obviously data loss. Which is my main reason to go with unRAID for the redundancy.

Thanks for any guidance that can be offered to a newcomer.

It depends on your hardware: size of drives, SATA controller, NIC, and motherboard.

Makes sense.

End goal will be a 15 drive set up, so eventually 28 TB of secured data storage. All 2TB drives.

When I need it I'll eventually be picking up a SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 PCI Express x4 Low Profile SAS RAID Controller - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816101358

Edit: One of the HDDs I bought from Newegg to break up the 3 to avoid all three being from the same batch. Attempting to circumvent multiple HDD failures. In hindsight probably should have bought one from another source as well to keep them all separate.

Perhaps a different approach - How do these components looks for a 15 drive unRAID server? If they look ok, would it be recommended to start with 4.7 and just wait for final release of 5 or should I just go ahead and do my initial setup with the most recent beta 5.0 b14?
