Salvaging drive after UDMA CRC errors

Featured Replies

Okay, kinda new to unraid but I've been doing a lot of reading, which is why my data isn't at risk. I just want to know if this hard drive is good to use or not. I'll give you the highlights of this saga.

First, it started with UDMA CRC errors on Disk 2. 411 if I remember correctly. This drive was then emulated and I needed to fix things.

Secondly, I replaced the drive with a new drive, rebuilt the data, but because I'm borrowing this drive I used the Unbalanced plugin to transfer the newly rebuilt data to the rest of the array. So non of my data is at stake.

Thirdly, I've put the old disk 2 back in hoping I can just format it, clear it, or something and all will be good again. From what I can tell the drive is still running fine, but that's also coming from my more basic knowledge. It still comes up as having 411 UDMA CRC errors. I started the array and Disk 2 is still being emulated.

So I have a few questions, could clear the drive to fix it, if so how? Should I not take the chance with this drive and get a new one? Is there anything I can do to save the drive?

Using Unraid 6.12.13

And I've attached a SMART extended self test and attached it to this post. Let me know if I should post any other info for ya'll.

UDMA errors are connection errors - not drive errors.   The value never gets reset so fixing the connection issue simply stops it increasing.

Once a drive has been disabled you need to rebuild it to clear this status.   If you think the drive is OK then you can Rebuild it to itself.

You cannot reset the UDMA errors, they are permanently counted and written onto the drive's SMART storage region.

But you can tell UNRAID to ignore the current count and take it as granted.

Just click on the warning icon in the GUI, a menu will open and there you find something like "ignore these errors" (dunno the exact phrase its long long ago that I have seen this message)

This will stop the warning until the drive counts more than 411 errors in the future. So keep an eye on the icon.

To get rid of the problem itself you need to check the cabling to the drive. Either lose plugs or electical interference can be the cause. In doubt change cables, if it still happens check the way of the data cable. If it runs in parallel to some others, there might be interference too. Put it elsewhere if possible, or even wrap the data cable in aluminum foil and ground it.

Can be a bit tricky to find the culprit an eliminate it. Don't give up!
