April 3, 201214 yr I would like to put my HDD's into hot swap bays, which would make my life easyer when replacing failed disks or adding new ones. Is there anything wrong with this one: http://www.supermicro.nl/products/accessories/mobilerack/cse-m35tq.cfm its the same brand as my mainboard (MBD-X7 SBE) the question is if I can use this in my unraid setup without any issues whatsoever. and does unraid support hot swap? if no, would I need to power it down when replacing/adding a disk? thanks in advance for any replies.
April 3, 201214 yr Unraid doesn't support hotswaps. You will have to power it down still. I believer they are working for UnRaid 5.0 to be able to have hotswap capabilities. I am also in the process of buying either the Supermicro's or Norco SS500. Even though, you will still have to power down the server, it is super easy to change / replace the drives. I've had to open my case about 3 times already trying different things on cable management, and it has become a PIA to keep taking out the two 3x4 cages holding my drives. The supermicors have a bigger fan, and come with hardware. The Norcos do not come with anything, and the fan is a little smaller I belive 80 mm compared to a 90 mm fan on the SM.
April 3, 201214 yr The Supermicro drive cages have their pros and cons. You can read my review of them here. Also check out Whaler_99's review here, and my latest review of the new version of the Norco SS-500 here. I think the best reason to use the Supermicro cages are if you want to use mostly hot-running 7200 RPM hard drives and want to be able to replace fans with ease. Otherwise, I would recommend the Norco SS-500 instead.
April 4, 201214 yr Unraid doesn't support hotswaps. You will have to power it down still. Partly true! You can hotswap without powering down, but you do have to stop the array and restart again for the new drive to be introduced into the array. If the drives you want to remove/add are not part of the array, then you can swap with the array started (eg to power a drive up for pre-clearing, or to copy files between devices).

You can do this and preclear the drive as well? or will you have to power down in order for the drive to be recognized in order to be preclear?

Basically the linux system recognises the hot swap but the unraid application running on top does not without restarting the array, and that is a good thing.... Yo uwould not want a loose cable to make the application think a hotswap is going on...
April 5, 201214 yr Author thanks again for all replies. Im running only 7200rpm enterprise disks in my unraid box, so Ill probably end up with the supermicro cages.
