April 3, 201214 yr Had a quick search on the forum but all threads that I found were fairly aged, so interested in seeing what the current status of this is. I'm about to build an unRAID server, which I hope to use to stream videos to my Xbox 360 and PS3. Is this currently possible, and if so, what do I need to set up to allow this to happen?
April 3, 201214 yr I suggest the latest Plex Media Server (beta) that supports DLNA and will stream to both Xbox and PS3. I've used Plex (minus DLNA) for years and I can highly recommend it. EDIT: Here is the thread for the unRAID plugin: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=14803.0;topicseen
April 6, 201214 yr Correct me if I am wrong...I tried Plex and it looks great. It works great on a Roku (v1). The only downside I saw with it was lack of .ISO or .VOB files unless you are using a full PC client. I'm about half MKV, 25% ISO and 25% VOB. I purchased an ATV3 for 5.1 Netflix and to just play around in hopes of a JB in the future for XBMC. GoogleTV may play those formats and there is an Andriod app. If I get that bored, I may re-rip everything into MKV and move to Plex and a Roku2. What about PS3MS?
April 6, 201214 yr I went and did a little reading about Plex...I came away with the feeling that the linux version of the server does not support hardly anything unless you are using an ATV or something similar. (Browsers need to support Webkit, no iso support, no itunes, no...the list goes on.) So, what use is it with PS3 or Xbox360? PS3's web browser is creaky old browser tech, I am not sure about Xbox, so how does Plex support these when running on top of unRaid? I am also evaluating different media servers, either as a frontend solution or preferably on the same server as unraid. I am also interested in PS3MS, installed it on another PC to test but have not taken the plunge to add it to my unraid server.
April 12, 201214 yr Plex gives you DLNA support which allows streaming to Xbox or PS3 - i.e. PS3MS - in addition, you get metadata collection and other functionality (streaming to iphone, android devices as well as the Plex Media Center application for mac, pc, (alpha/beta linux build)). There is no need to use a web browser to stream media, the consoles will see the media using DLNA.
April 15, 201214 yr Author Many thanks for the Plex recommendation - looks like a very nice solution! Going to give it a crack now.
May 7, 201214 yr It is, especially if you are using a device that supports the client app. If you are using a ps3 or xbox 360, it is less than the expected experience. (Not plex's fault - M$oft and Sony's decision.) Wish they would allow the use of the plex frontend - then i would remove all complaints. Since I am.stuck with a crappy old browser on my PS3, I am looking for a web frontend to deliver that videowall experience. I don't want to buy another device just to occupy another HDMI port...and for WAF, I want a videowall.
