January 18, 20251 yr I saw this basic subject line in another post. They posted smart test results and diagnostics. I have the diagnostics (below), but when I try to run a smart test (short) the button just toggles stop/start and does not perform a test. Does that mean I have a dead drive? Thanks for any help. Also, here's a screenshot of warnings. tower-diagnostics-20250118-1238.zip Edited January 18, 20251 yr by NewNASguy
January 19, 20251 yr Disk dropped offline, the controller is also set to IDE mode, set it to ACHI in the BIOS, then reboot and post new diags after array start.
January 19, 20251 yr Author Thanks. Prior to changing this, should I make this change for all discs in the system, including parity disc? Or just the affected disc. Thanks for the help. Also, I just realized that it says there is no cache installed. I have an SSD installed as cache that was being recognized before. I was going to ask if that also need to be changed to AHCI but I don't see it at all now. Edited January 19, 20251 yr by NewNASguy
January 19, 20251 yr Author Here are new diagnostics after changing controller setting tower-diagnostics-20250119-1421.zip
January 19, 20251 yr Disabled/emulated disk1 is mounted and has plenty of contents. But the physical disk is not showing up in your diagnostics. Can you see it in BIOS?
January 19, 20251 yr Author I cannot see this drive, nor can I see the SSD cache drive. I can see my parity drive and another drive that is unmounted.
January 20, 20251 yr I see parity and an unassigned drive that doesn't seem to be disk1. (You seem to be using the word "unmounted" incorrectly. The OS "mounts" a disk by loading some of its metadata to allow it to work with a filesystem on the disk.) I don't see SSD cache in the diagnostics either. There are several devices that seem to be related to a USB memory card reader. How are these missing drives attached?
January 20, 20251 yr Author Correct - unassigned, not unmounted. I'm using an old hulk of a tower pc as a basis. The missing drive is stuck in a drive bay, connected via sata cable. The cache drive is an SSD, also connected via sata. Taking another look at BIOS sata configuration, the parity drive and unassigned drive show as connected to sata plugs. All other sata plugs show as empty.
January 20, 20251 yr Swap ports with the good drives to check that ports are good and the disks are good.
January 26, 20251 yr Author After a fair amount of juggling, I have determined that all the ports are good and the cables are good. So that tells me that the drive is bad. What is the easiest way for me to use that unassigned drive (which is the same size as the bad data drive) as the new data drive? Thanks for your assistance thus far. (Interestingly, when I plugged in the bad data drive, it made the adjacent port good drive disappear in the BIOS sata configuration. Not really sure why that would be.) Also, my cache drive became unmounted. I re-mounted it, but it is not showing as cache. How do I re-establish this as cache? Thanks Edited January 26, 20251 yr by NewNASguy

You have an unassigned HDD (sdg) and an unassigned SSD (sdh), neither of which are mounted. Let's leave cache alone for now, and Disable Docker and VM Manager in Settings until we take care of cache later. Do you want to rebuild disk1 to unassigned sdg?
January 26, 20251 yr OK, let's see if parity emulation will allow disabled/missing disk1 to be mounted. Don't assign anything as disk1 yet. Just start the array in normal (not maintenance) mode and post new diagnostics.
January 27, 20251 yr OK, emulated disk1 is mounted and has plenty of data. Stop the array, assign new disk as disk1, start array to begin rebuild.
January 27, 20251 yr Author Array started. Data rebuild underway. Thanks for your help in this process so far.
February 2, 20251 yr Author Data rebuild complete. New diagnostics attached. tower-diagnostics-20250202-0929.zip
