Migrating to a new machine

Featured Replies

Good morning all!

I plan on migrating from a Dell RD720XD to a newer server. None of the drives will be the same. I will be moving from 24 x 1TB drives over to 8 x 10TB drives and a completely different system.

What is the best way to backup and restore all data so that nothing is lost data wise? I want to make sure I don't lose my Plex library or my son's Minecraft server as he, his friends and I have spent a lot of time building on it.

Is there an actual backup and restore utility or do I need to just copy everything to an external drive and then copy it back once I have made the switch?

Thanks in advance!

Safest way?... Build your new server on a trial.  Get things running steady.  Migrate data from old to new server via network.

After all is setup and working properly, I can just switch to my already paid for license? Like just switch which USB drive holds the license?

Yes.  You can transfer your license to the new USB stick once it's all up and running on the trial.  Then your old USB stick guid will get blacklisted when you do that.

An alternative is to transfer the ‘config’ folder (except for the .key licence file) to transfer all settings.
